Framed Schrade print..........

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Framed Schrade print..........

Post by knife7knut »

While cleaning out my garage this afternoon I came across this print that I recall picking up at a yard sale.Forgot that the reason I bought it was that the frame is stamped,"Schrade Walden".

As the pasteboard backing was warped a bit I decided to pull it apart and smooth it out a bit.Much to my surprise the frame(which I though was wood-grained plastic)turned out to be actually made of wood.

The print is titled,"Northern" which I assume is because of the subject matter which appears to be a Northern Pike.It is by an artist with the last name of Schappel and it is part of the Shakespeare Collection(whatever that may be).

Any idea when these were made and were they to commemorate an event? Were there others in the series and how many? Any info would be greatly appreciated. It will probably go up for sale as I have no room to put any more art work in my shop;in fact I had to take all of my own works down to accomodate all the other's art work I own. Here are the pics.

I don't think that print had anything to do with Schrade, those frames actually held knife displays. Possibly the Shakespeare Collection they're referring to has to do with the fishing tackle company?

Eric: It looks to be all original right down to the rusty staples I removed from the back.Although it is deep enough to hold knives,I don't believe this one ever did.Maybe Schrade used these frames for multiple uses.Whatever the case it was an interesting(and inexpensive)piece. If I recall I didn't pay more than a dollar for it.

Very nice score for a dollar knife7knut. I'm always keeping my eyes open for good looking old wood frames but I have never seen one associated with a cutlery company.

It is simply a knife display case that has been used to put a picture in. Nothing more. LT

I am with Eric and Rich on this one. Still an excellent find. Consider displaying some knives in it. That would take a little work and skill, but do-able. ::tu::
