I am a newbie

Good evening all, my name is Guy and I am from Edmonton Alberta Canada. My forum name is Sitting Bull and refers to the fact that I ride commercial Toro riding mowers. I sit on it for a living and my wife says that I have been known to bull sh... some. So the name sitting bull was born. I have come here to learn as much as I can about pocket knives I have never owned one , if you can believe that. I do not know how I even got started desiring the little guys , but all of a sudden I'm here. I stumbled on Case and Great Eastern Cutlery and I fell in love with the beauty of the workmanship. Any way over the last couple days I went to the antique stores looking for one to start with and could not find what I wanted. I was scared to get ripped off. I would like one to carry daily and then would like to collect and display a variety of history regarding the North American knife makers. If you have any recommendations regarding my first pocket knife new or used feel free to tell me. Hopefully you wont mind the beginner questions even if you may have seen and answered them often.

Welcome to AAPK. This is the place to get an education but it's not going to happen over night. You're going to get a lot of advice, most of it based on the poster's preferences. That's not bad. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I'm a Camillus, Schatt & Morgan and Kershaw guy so anything I would recommend would be slanted that way. Take your time. don't get in a hurry, BUY WHAT YOU LIKE and hang out at AAPK. Read. Read. Read.

I agree with Jerry. That is a hard question to answer. I would go and look at some in hand. Consider the budget you have and the quality available in that range. If you can narrow down your choices we may be able to be a bit more helpful (with our personal opinions) but you will be the one using it and carrying it, so it's really up to you to decide

Welcome. My limited experience convinces me that the hobby is vast in scope, there are many different paths one can follow. In addition to previous suggestions I'd encourage you to subscribe to some publications like Knife World. Perhaps buy a few books focused on traditional knives. Send a way for catalogs of major manufacturers or visit their web sites to see what draws your interest: perhaps a particular style of knife, or handle material, or manufacturer.

If you will visit AAPK frequently and observe the different threads you will have the opportunity to learn many things about your new hobby.
You have begun a great hobby and interest. Enjoy!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Already I have noticed the amount of info here. There is more to it then just picking a knife. here in Edmonton there is no place that carries these brand of knives. One place sells a few case but the are sealed in those stupid plastic moulded packages. They will not open them unless I purchase it. So I am really stuck buying online or vintage shops etc... Not much choice for me.

You might want to check out the members knives that are for sale on this site. E-bay is anoher option, but BE CAREFUL! If you have a question about anything, ASK! As the guys previously suggested, educate yourself.

Welcome Guy,

1 point of advise I would give you if you are thinking of starting a collection, figure out what you like/want and stick to it at first.

Most people collect (initially) either A) a certain brand, B) a certain handle material, or C) a certain knife pattern.

Once you get the hang of what the terms and lingo mean, and what prices are fair, and what knives are highly collectible, then you can branch out into whichever direction you wish.

Hope you learn and have a good time here at AAPK. I'm relatively new myself, and learn more every day.
