Didn't bag a deer this weekend, but had a great time in the woods of Northern Wisconsin with my brothers and nephew....Here's a couple of my bro's after we finished up an unsuccessful drive. That's a 22 foot ladder stand there, bird's eye view! The joke was the stand is so high, the shooting lanes were obscured by clouds....

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Finally connected with a buck Wednesday evening, he came out right at the last few minutes of legal light to join the three does that had been feeding for about an hour in a food plot cut into a swamp (the third one hadn't arrived when I took the picture). I was in a tower stand on the ridge, looking down - he hit the ground hard then jumped up and bolted into the woods, (it was thick!), found him 60 yards into that stuff. OH
Ps. Glad to see everyone having fun hunting deer. That is two deer for me now, will switch to birds and ducks in about another week, then rabbit in January and February - great time of year.

Hey OH, congrats on a beautiful buck and a successful season.
What rifle do you use to bag that buck?
We are patiently waiting for the season to start on Monday.

Old Hunter, Good report! Good deer and good pictures. Looks like a great place for a food plot and the results prove it.
We are having our 1st short season (4 days),then reopening in December through Feb. I took my 2 grandsons Thanksgiving afternoon for a hour. 1st time for them to go deer hunting.
We made a practice run in the early afternoon to get them acquainted with climbing out of the shooting house after dark. All went well, didn't see any deer, you can imagine how it went as they are 6 and 8 years old! An exercise in patience even if I was prepared not to see a deer! How long does it take a boy to forget to whisper? About 5 or 6 words! How many times can a boy bang the side of the shooting house with a pair of binoculars? I lost count! It takes about 30 minutes for them to decide they can watch for a deer with the binoculars turned around looking through the objective lens. And it took about 45 minutes for the 1st fight to come to blows!
All in all it was a good experience for us, I'm sure they learned something and will be eager to go again, individually. As I see it, it was as a great success as I didn't have to dress a buck when we got back to the house!

Thanks for the compliments guys, deer hunting is just good old fun!
Scott - I have never made venison jerky (I don't eat commercial jerky so it never crossed my mind to make any from venison) - you come up here, shoot a deer and you can have all the meat!
Caleb, I shot that buck with one of my two favorite rifles, a Winchester M88 chambered in .308 WIN.
Treefarmer - teaching those young boys, your grandsons, is doing a good, good work - we have to pass on our heritage and values. Congratulations to you for mentoring them (and I know you have the patience of Job) - eventually you will have a couple of partners that will last your lifetime and make great memories for their's.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I spent 11 1/2 hours in the woods on Saturday and 10 hours on Sunday but didn't see a buck to pull the trigger on. I must have seen a dozen plus doe but no suiters. One guy in our group did get a small 3 pt. but that has been it so far, probably won't make it back to do any more hunting before the season runs out.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I could have harvested a 6 pack of squirrels just outside my hunting hut. Saw a sweet looking fox squirrel making his rounds an 2 sets of greys and 1 momma/bachelor. Last year it was warmer and a flock of turkeys roosted right above my hut one night. Then I got to hear them take off one by one the next morning, talk about a racket. Haven't seen them since that day.
Sweet looking squirrel picture.

I thought you folks might enjoy seeing a couple of pictures I took from my deck this afternoon. That big boy is taking his leisure about 75 yards behind my house, just hanging out with his girlfriend down by the pond.

Phil,
If you got bass in that pond to go with your venison on the hoof, you got the survivalists dream right there!
You gonna' put that ol' boy on the dinner table this year?
He is lookin' mighty tasty!

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I doubt I'll be making deer chili out of that buck this year. Modern gun season has ended here and I don't bow hunt. There is a short muzzle loader season coming up in a couple of weeks and I might do a little hunting then. I just hope he'll hang around that long, but it's doubtful. It was a thril for me just to get those pictures.
I haven't caught any fish out of that pond in a long time but I haven't tried all that often either. I think the great blue herrons have depleted it pretty seriously. They have a lot more free time than I do for fishing.
They've been pretty rough on the frog population too. But I still like seeing them. I'm blessed to live in a place where there is still a healthy population of wildlife.
