Bob Costas anti-gun rant

Post by Jigslinger »

I'm sure I'm not the only one who took offense to Bob Costas' anti-gun rant at half-time on the NFL late game. He quoted another idiot, Jason Whitlock, during the piece. Wrong time, wrong place for the subject anyway. Ended with "If (KC player) didn't have a gun both he and his wife would be alive today." Typical. Painted gun owners as gun waving zealots. I guess if he'd have used a baseball bat Costas would want those outlawed too. Lots of hand wringing and crying about the player on the pre-game shows. At least Tom Jackson called him what he was- a murderer. Maybe we should outlaw football too if it makes players go nuts.

Pardon my language but that son-of-a-gun really made me mad.
It was completely out of place and had no basis in reality. Who says he gets to get on TV and espouse his anti-gun opinions!

Well put Jigslinger. I read Whitlock's column and I usually like what I read. The rest
of the column was pretty good. He criticized the NFL for forcing the game to be
held.

I really like this quote:

"A 25-year-old kid gunned down his 22-year-old girlfriend in front of his mother
and three-month-old child, and all he could think to do in the immediate
aftermath was rush to thank his football coach and football employer. Belcher’s
last moments on this earth weren’t spent thanking the mother who raised him or
apologizing to the child he would orphan. His final words of gratitude, and
perhaps remorse, were reserved for his football gods."

It shows you what kind of man Belcher was, or wasn't more appropriately.
Whitlock also went on a brief anti-gun rant, and that's where he lost me. I
didn't see Costa's chit until later via the website.

As usual, gun owners take it on the chin for idiots like Belcher. Just need to
keep repeating the old saying "Guns don't kill people....."

All the gun laws in the world can't fix stupid.

Edit:

Turns out Belcher was also a drunk and on painkillers - Let's ban alcohol
and prescription drugs while we're at it.
Life would be meaningless if we couldn't wish for anything.

As I am not a fan of football or any of the other so-called "sports" these thugs participate in,I would second the opinion that it should be banned. One of the reasons this barbaric game continues to be so popular is it is sanctioned by a great deal of people who enjoy watching other people beat each other's heads in and continue to support the advertisers who sponsor same. Where else can you consume many illegal or harmful substances;break laws without fear of retribution, and father as many illegitimate children as you like and get paid millions of dollars a year for doing it?
And if you somehow manage to finish out your "career"(?) without getting maimed for life or winding up in jail or dead.you can go on TV and rant incoherently about the game with a bunch of other losers who did exactly the same thing.Nothing like listening to a 300+ lb steroid crazed Neanderthal(with apologies to the Neanderthal race) babble for a couple hours in monosyllables(two syllable words are totally foreign to them except for the M-F word).
I don't know what Bob Costas' credentials are for landing a commentator's job and quite frankly I don't care. He's just another idiot spouting the anti-gun line that sooner or later is going to come down to a civil war in this land so I would advise all of yuo out there reading this to heed the words of my wife and the late Johnny Fain:"Buy more bullets";cause you're gonna need them soon.

I always listen to KC sports radio when I am driving and had to go to KC for dr appt today and was great to hear Kevin Keitzman calling him for what he was, a coward and murderer. Amazing though how many people called in saying KK was an idiot. KK would ask them point blank was he a murderer and if they didn't say yes he hung up on them. Awesome radio this afternoon.

But nobody forces anyone to play football. Or watch football. ::shrug::

I say let free born men play football if they want, and buy guns if they want. There are some low-lifes in the NFL - just like life in general. But there are lots of good men who play /or played in the NFL.

Whoa nut, I was only kidding about outlawing football. I'd say you have a pessimistic view of sports in general and pro sports in particular, which is certainly your right. Can't say I agree with your description of pro athletes as thugs and the rest of it. These athletes have dedicated their lives to excelling at their sport and have done it on their own free will. Many contribute a great deal to their communities, such as establishing charities and so forth. Most are upstanding citizens. Personally, I played various sports all my life, including through the college level. I love sports and the history of sports. Are there some bad people that play pro sports? Sure there are. Sports are a microchasm of society so there are bound to be crooks, liars, theives, and yes, murderers just like overall society. Just like servicemen or any other group aren't all angels. To condemn the whole lot isn't rational. Many people take exception to the money pro athletes make. They forget it is what the market will bear (like the fact that there are $250,000 cars out there) and athletes only have careers that last a few years. As for the maiming part, it's a risk they choose to take. Sport is ingrained in American society, thankfully. And the history is rich. But if a person has never given an up fake, put the ball on the floor, and gone up and buried a sweet three pointer, they will never know the thrill sport can give to players as well as spectators.

Thanks Jig. You made my point more eloquently than I did.

My Dad played in the NFL, and I played in college. My Dad does not even remotely resemble Knifenut's description of NFL players - thank goodness!

Perhaps I should have clarified my point a bit. I too enjoyed watching and participating(albeit not that well)in sports when I was in high school and maybe up until about 10-15 years ago.Since that time I feel that sports and in particular football have degenerated into a bloodsport that teaches participants more of the fine art of taking their opponents out of the game(sometimes permanently)and playing to win whatever the cost. I would think that when your dad and you played the situation was a lot different. How many 300+ lb. players were in the league back then? How prevalent was steroid and other body enchancing chemicals were in use? How many free-for-alls on and off the field happened? How many out-of-wedlock children were being fathered and bragged about like notches on a gunslingers pistol?

Sports is far different now than it was then and I(sadly) stand by my original statements.
