Is this a Shrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Is this a Shrade?

Post by treefarmer »

Posted a picture of this knife in "knife finds of the day". Something about it felt so familiar, so I dug out a retired Old Timer- Schrade Trapper 940T and compared it with the Imperial DE, very similar. Did Schrade make this Imperial? The tang on the clip blade is almost like the "new grind" that Case had back in '83 according to knifeaholic's book. It's the best feeling Imperial I've ever handled.

More like Imperial made Schrade. In Blade's Guide to Knives on page 152 they have the history of Schrade. Just Google Blades Guide to Knives page 152 and you should get the history.Grant

Shearer, Thanks for the information. I find how little I know about knives everytime I read history such as you shared with me. My only exposure to the Imperial knives had been some that were not very good quality and probably an economy line. Apparently Imperial was a giant in the knife world years ago. There seems to have been a lot of crossover work with a lot of companies making knives for each other at different times? Now I think I know that Imperial made the Schrade. ::hmm:: and then I find out some of my Bucks and Remingtons were made by Camillus! A guy can get confused around here!

Shearer, I got to bed kinda late last night, wife asked "What have you been doing?", told her I had been informed, by a man from Australia, that knives ain't what you think they are! Got to get a copy of "Blade Guide to Knives & their Values, 7th addition" it is full of interesting facts. That is some interesting stuff in your last post. Thanks again Shearer, for enlightening me or did you just muddy up the water? ::shrug:: Treefarmer

Please excuse the poor stitching job. As always, left click picture twice to get full size.

The Imperial Diamond Edge series, from around 1972-73. Nice quality knives, pretty satin finish on the blades.

jerryd, I believe that is one of the pages that Shearer refered me to.
thawk, I noticed that all those Imperials in that series have the "new grind" on the tang that Case tried almost 10 years later.
Thanks for the help. It is really a pleasure to participate on the AAPK forums!

At one recent point in history, Schrade, Camillus & Imperial were under one ownership. Both the Imperial plant and the Camillus plant made some knives for Schrade. Camillus made some Old Timers for Schrade, among some other knives, and Imperial made some of the "Parker" Schrade contract knives. Imperial made NO Old Timers for Schrade, and Schrade made NO Diamond Edges for Imperial. And Schrade is spelled like this: S C H R A D E (unless you are speaking of Taylor Chinese knives, in which case it is spelled SCHARADE). I think.  :D ::hmm::

Here are a couple pictures I took this morning of the 392 barehead jack and 322 folding hunter.

I've often wondered how this satin polished finish came to be? I don't think I've seen in on any other knives from the Imperial Schrade family. It is visually pleasing and very camera friendly, unlike the shiny CV or other crocus polished finishes.

And Cal, add Ulster to that list of "under one ownership". And I think Imperial did make the Shrade made Derlin handles for the Imperial Jim Bowie 8OT SFO, which looked like an Old Timer. ::uc:: And Schrade Walden did make Diamond Edge knives for Shapleigh Hardware. :D

I had a feeling I needed a little correction, there; thanx! Imperial made the stockman knives for the revolutionary heroes series, all of which are basically 8 OTs, which are basically 881s. The Delrin in that series was in colors not seen anytime or anywhere else that I am aware of. However, although these are all 8 OTs in disguise, they are NOT 8 OTs as such. By the way, that bone handled Diamond Edge stockman is gorgeous. Is that the same pattern as the 899?

That Shapleigh is a C836, equivalent to a Schrade Walden 883, 4" stockman with a turkish clip. I don't think Schrade did one for themselves with that master blade.

And on the other hand, I think the parts swapping possibilities on the aforementioned brands of knives are unlimited.
