Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Thanks for posting that video Ray. I had something of a similar nature happen to me a few years ago. I shot a buck and it dropped near the edge of a field where the woods began. After field dressing the deer I went and got my truck and a buddy to help load the deer. When we arrived back where I had downed the buck there was another larger buck standing about 20 feet from the dead one, facing the downed deer. We were in plain view of that second deer when we drove up into the field and stopped. The big deer stood his ground refusing to leave. My buddy didn't give him time to attack the downed deer. He grabbed his rifle and dropped the big buck within feet of the one I'd already killed.

I have never seen or heard of that happening. I do believe that if the guys in the video had gotten in the way they would have been attacked.
I guess testerone just causes strange things to happen.

The craziest thing I have seen hunting was I was charged by a doe after I took a shot at her!
I thought I hit her too. Maybe I did and that is why she was mad!

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
It's this time of year I love living in this little condo with a clear view of the community retention pond.
Right now I can see 5 Hooded Mergansers, 2 mallards, and a Muscovy duck with new ducklings......about a dozen of 'em.
Yesterday I watched a red breasted hawk sitting on a limb for 15 minutes about 20 feet from me.

Sounds really cool Scott.
I saw a bald eagle the other day up at the lake, trying to snatch squirrels out of the trees. First one I have seen around here, they are HUGE. Plenty of redtails around the house all the time.

Scott,
Now that's cool to see that kinda thing outside the window!
Gents,
A quick update. Thus year I'd 'geared' up. For years I've shot a 243 and used a older folding kabar 1189 lockback or Buck 102 fixed blade. This year I did something I wanted for a long time, got a left handed 30 06 and added a Beretta loveless drop point hunter knife.
Here's the result after a few days of hunting. Needed some freezer meat, and you can't eat horns so... Got a vension chili cooking for tonight, right now.

Nice video Ray. These animals are to be respected for sure.
Nice view Scott. I have 10 inches of the snow at the house since Christmas. Been too damn cold to melt off. Down to -10 degrees at night and highs in the mid 20s. Mountains sure are beautiful.
Hey Thomas,
Good deal. Yup, horns don't fill the stomach. My dogs sure like chewing and gnawing on them though. It's good for them.
Been meaning to ask this question. Thomas mentioned he picked up a left handed bolt action.
Anyone here right handed but left eye dominant? My son and I are. Only thing I do left handed is shoot a rifle. Pistol and everday life stuff, right handed. Don't have any left handed long guns but I work out a pretty quick action to do what I need to do at minimal time loss.
Just curious as i haven't ran across too many people that are. It not a heriditery thing as my Dad was a righty all the way.
Regards, Jerry

Nice score, TAB, if you have a good venison chili recipe could you PM it to me? So far I've baked a roast but I have about 10 lbs. of deer meat left for other creations.
TripleF, are you allowed to "harvest" what enters the pond? I was jonesin' for a Christmas goose but it didn't happen. I think I'm going to build a little smokehouse.

I've got a good one, and give me a day or two to transcribe it (handwritten) and ill shoot it to you. It's built to be mild or hot, depending on what you put in.

Thomas - nice deer and very nice rifle - I love nice rifles as much as I love nice knives! Attached is my venison chili recipe; of course I've never made it exactly the same way twice (wrote it down for a hunting buddy several years ago - quit making notes on changes because it really doesn't matter, does it?) I make it more spicy for my buddies, less spicy when my wife and daughter are eating it. OH

Jerry and Caddyman1973, I am just the opposite left handed and right eye dominant. Always shot rifles and shotguns right handed feels natural. Shoot pistols and compound bow left handed. Go figure.

zp4ja, Jerry, (too many Jerrys)
Noticed your post about being right handed and having a dominant left. My son and are both guilty. I realized my condition years ago after reading about it in the American Rifleman. Had been shooting since I was a little shaver and never had a problem, even at Parris Island had no problems on the rifle range with the M-14. You just closed the left eye and have at it! When my son started being intrested in shooting, we did one of the simple finger point tests and sure enough he had a dominant left eye. We started him shooting long guns left handed and he had no trouble with shooting from the left shoulder. He was 9 years old when he killed his 1st deer with an iron sighted Remington 788 .243. He would work the bolt with his left hand and be right back on target. I am really aware of the issue when shooting a hand gun, both eyes open, I'll be seeing the sights with the left eye. Deer hunting from a stand is not a problem using a scoped rifle, I'm able shoot from either side if I need to. Interesting topic to discuss.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Hello Gents,
Interesting discussion on the dominant hand/ eye, indeed!
While I can shoot a pistol with both hands, seem more natural in the right, since I am right handed. As far as rifle, since my Dad was right handed, I guess he assumed I was since I shot a pistol and did everyday tasks righty. This was until I was shooting a scoped .243 right handed and I was rolling my cheek over the top of the rifle butt to use my left eye. Switched to lefty then.
I guess when shooting a rifle or shotgun, the gun feels like an extension of my left eye/shoulder. Using a handgun right handed, the gun feels like an extension of my hand, not my eye. Best I can describe it.
I do however need to compensate slighty when pistol shooting by aiming right slightly due to left eye dominance and of course that compenstaion varies based on distance to target. Works pretty damn good though, at least for me. I have gotten used to it. If it was a problem I some point will just mount a laser. No issue yet.
Jerry

I remembered tonight the chili recipe. I dug it out and posting here. Use 6 chili pods for mild, 9 for hot, 12 if you want to belch fire and pee coals.

Writing down both recipes so I can hit the grocery store after work tomorrow. Using 2-3 lbs of deer meat. Leaves me with a steak and tenderloin I might keep for grilling this summer.
