Concealed Carry in Illinois -- The good. The bad & the Ugly
The good -- It appears as though the courts have mandated Illinois fall in line with the other 49 states and obey the Constitution by passing legislation permitting private citizens to carry concealed.
The bad -- It appears as though Illinois will be a "May Issue" state.
The ugly -- It appears as though Illinois will model their concealed carry legislation after the state of New York which has the most restrictive concealed carry laws in the land, making it (for a private citizen) the most difficult state in the union in which to obtain a concealed carry permit.
The Democrats giveth and the Democrats taketh away. May God have mercy on our souls.

Jerry, join the exodus and move to Missouri! I know several Illinois people who have moved here for that very reason....as well as from California, New Jersey, New York.....
God Bless!

It will be interesting to see if they honor any other states carry license.

Especially if Illinois uses New York legislation as a model. According to this website -- http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry ... _maps.html -- New York does not honor the permits of ANY other state.xstuntman wrote:It will be interesting to see if they honor any other states carry license.

Jerry D, What makes you think NY state is so tough on CCP's? I haven't seen any major changes since I got mine 45 years ago. I know people who have acquired concealed carry permits very recently, my grandson included. If you are talking about New York City, then that's a whole different republic. LOL

Big Monk, Not true. NY state does not recognize pistol permits from ANY other state. The only state I know which honors pistol permits from ALL states is Vermont.

Re: Concealed Carry in Illinois -- The good. The bad & the U
New York is a May Issue state and the criteria for issue is set by individual municipalities. From what I've read, your permit is no good in The City. That was part of the discussion about New York's draconian concealed carry laws. They were talking about how harshly the law is applied in The City and how it's easier to get a permit in the rest of the state, especially the rural areas. Plus New York state does not honor permits from any other state in the union according to http://www.usacarry.comwishful wrote:Jerry D, What makes you think NY state is so tough on CCP's? Again, according to usacarry.com there are several states who honor all state carry permits except Vermont (Indiana & Kentucky to name just two). Why Vermont? As I understand it you don't need a permit in Vermont to carry concealed. All you need is to be a citizen of Vermont.
Sticker -- There is no firearm registration in Illinois, neither handguns nor long guns BUT we do have firearm owner registration. To legally own, purchase or sell a firearm of any kind or ammunition, you are required to have a FOID card (Firearm Owners Identification Card) So they don't know what you have but they do know who has 'em.

CCP's in NY state are issued by individual counties, not municipalities. NYC is another story. That city doesn't interest me at all and the mayor is something else. Also, the only firearms we register in NY are handguns. All other guns we own are not known by anyone, officially. Again, I can't speak for NYC. Don't care.

Monk -- According to https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/travel/ a South Carolina carry permit is good in the following states.
And these are the states you can carry in if you have a resident South Carolina permit and a non-resident New Hampshire permit.
I only see a handfull of states New Hampshire adds.

In Dutchess co NY, when you apply you fill a form in triplicate, need to get 4 ref. not LEO or related to or live with.
They also go through a back ground check and sign in front of a notary. May get a visit from a trooper for an interview too.
They will give you an apt in 6 month or more to get an appointment to file the aplication.
I hear now they are so backed up it can be 8 to 10 months out.
You get finger printed 5 times manually That you pay for.
No one who lives outside NY can get a permit. Must live here for 6 months.
A unregulated ccp is even harder to get, must show good cause.
I am getting the heck out of NY, the taxes, the crazy knife and new gun laws.
Now it is 7 rounds max in a clip. Cant have a hole in the stock, or pistol grip handle on a long gun
I am looking into Fl. or Tn, Ga, Sc.
Plus being red in a blue state makes my vote useless.
Fl is looking good, friends and family there and no state income tax.

Re: Concealed Carry in Illinois -- The good. The bad & the U
As a former Massachusetts resident and holder of a CCW permit since I was 23,I can relate to the hassle that one encounters when trying to obtain one.
When I lived there(up until 1993)the permits were issued by a designated police officer(usually the town Safety Officer)in the town you resided. As there were 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth, you had 351 different opinions as to whether you were worthy of getting a CCW.Both the NRA and GOAL(Gun Owners Action League) worked to try and change it so there was one central office that handled all applications.Don't know if it ever happened but as I understand it the situation is even worse now.
Strangely enough you could apply for and obtain a permit to carry a fully automatic weapon at the time! I had thought about it as a friend of mine was a Class III dealer and wanted to sell a German MP-40 to me.After a bit of research I decided that having such a permit wasn't a smart move for a number of reasons.Basically it involved the BATF(E) and their ability to search a permit holder's residence WITHOUT obtaining a warrant if any crimes involving automatic weapons were committed anywhere near your home. And we all know where THAT leads.
Fortunately the towns I lived in were pretty good about issuing CCW's as long as you had a clean record. They were good for 5 years and when renewed you had to go through another background check and fingerprinting.I had less checking when I had a secret security clearance in the Navy.
Transferring a gun between permit holders consisted of filling out two forms(one by the buyer and the other the seller)and filing them with the proper agency(Department of Public Safety if I recall correctly). There was no fee.Now as I understand it the fee for transferring ownership of a weapon is $100 per gun! I'm really surprised other states have not followed suit.Just another wasy to screw the law abiding citizens.

I live in the middle of upstate NY, Oneida County. Right now it generally takes over a year to receive your pistol permit in Oneida County. Every county has it's own issuing judge, and every county has different requirements as per permit requirements. Oneida Co. has required the NRA basic pistol course, or equivalent for some time. I was an instructor for that for about 14 years, just got burned out doing it, more fun just to be out shooting. May have to move somewhere's else just to do that pretty soon, this isn't a good state to be if you guys are paying attention. God bless America & God help America.
