Old Hunter you said a mouthful there! I almost cry when I think back 50 years and remember all the old Winchesters we boys traded around without a clue of what we had in our hands. I remember one in particular, a model 92 saddle ring carbine 32-20, traded for somehting I don't remember and the list goes on... Treefarmer

Well, here we go.....This Saturday I've rented a camp site, bout a half hour north of here.
I am packing my grandsons in the car and heading to a State Park with over 20 miles of marked trails!
Even though we have no tent, and won't be spending the night in the woods, I have a tarp I will tie to a couple trees and make a make-shift wilderness camp site!

So, in excited preparation I've gathered some knives for the day's excursion, and I thought I'd post a pic in the Outdoorsman
Thread! The Utica Adirondack fixed blade and the Case Scout/Utility will be strapped onto my belt, while the others
will rest in the plastic tackle box and called upon if needed.

Have a great time Scott! Great times and good for young boys to show them how to improvise (the tarp) when they are young. Look forward to see pics of the trip.

Have you met the GOVERNER?

I figured best to buy it now. This might deemed an “evil gun” soon for all I know. This gun does fit the “Outdoorsman” for snakes, varmints, etc, even knocking down big game or predator in close with the right round.

Smith and Wesson GOVERNER. 2" barrel, 6 shot. 30 ounces. Fires various 2-1/2" 410 shells, 45 Long Colt, 45 ACP (need to use a moon clip just like some of the old S&W revolvers for .45 ACP). Similar to the Taurus Judge 5 shot revolver. Came with a "Crimson Trace" laser grip also. Not that I needed any more guns but you know how it is.

Laser sight has an integrated pressure switch activated by your middle finger in the finger groove under the trigger guard. Free lifetime batteries, one set per year. I would not have put the laser sight on it myself, had it not come with one. But hey, a red laser dot in your chest or on your forehead might cause the person on the receiving end to have second thoughts about the stupid idea that caused said idiot to end up with a laser dot on their chest or forehead. Your results may vary including intruder defecation, apologies that fall on deaf eras, panic or jumping thru the nearest window, etc. I like the silver at the barrel end also, gives the recipient an idea of the round they are dealing with.

Forget the laser. With 3 possible cartridges to use including all the variations of projectiles, pretty versatile for a variety of applications, all mostly short range of course. I like the fact you can load various rounds with different applications in the same cylinder. Mixed bag if you will without reload required. I bought $400 in ammo for it. Buy it while you can. Some 410 000 3 pellet BuckShot, alot of 250 grain Long Colt 45 and some 185 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point in 45 ACP. The real nasty defense round for close in is the Winchester PDX1 DEFENDER 410 Shot Shell. Features 3 .410 diameter "flat discs" at the tip followed by 12 BBs. The discs hit pretty flat and group well from what I have read. Probably will more the do the job with less blood and gray matter to cleanup versus the Long Colt. Need to be practical, you know.
Anyway, sorry to ramble just an excited man at this moment. Look forward to trying it out this weekend on some unsuspecting large melons if I can find some.

Jerry, first I have seen of the Governor - looks like the quality piece normally made by S&W. I've seen a Taurus version several times, in fact one of the Taurus models was used by a fellow to murder his wife's lover about ten days ago in Duplin County NC (don't know if he shot him with the 45 Colt or the 410 shotshell) - shooter was a wealthy farmer in his 50's - took his adult son with him to witness the murder - be interesting to see how that trial goes. OH

Took the kids on a partial camping mission yesterday. I say partial because we didn't have a tent but we did have a site!
It was hotter than mid mid-August....it was actually 85. The weather sucked apples!

I brought my nephew and his kids, my brother in law and his kidz and my grandsons for a total of 10.

We did have a blast!

Kids ran and climbed trees all day long.....and loved the whole mission!

Nope, not all grandkids TJ....my nephew and his 2 kids and my bro in-law and three kids, and my 2 grandsons.

Had a terrific bird hunting trip on 2/28 at Buchanan Shoals - about 65 miles east of Charlotte. They release birds during the season that covey up and provide a hunt that is much closer to natural birds than most preserves I have been to - the birds flush as coveys, or flush wild ahead of the dogs, you get some covey shooting and lots of walking up singles. The guide uses two setters to find and point the birds and the lab as a flusher - it is a lot of fun. OH

Mmmmmmm! Those pictures bring back memories of the 70's and 80's when we still had a few quail around here and I hunted as a kid with my dad.

What gun did you use? Surely you didn't leave the old model 12 at home!

One of my uncles was a quail hunter. They came up where we were living, south of Champaign IL a little ways, sometime around 1960 during pheasant season. Those big slow pheasant were no match for him. The limit was three roosters but he was shooting every thing that got up. I lost respect for him that day, not that he cared what I thought of him.

Dogg, it was great - my first hunting trips as a boy of 7 or 8 (50 years ago) were on my uncle's farms (side by side farms) hunting birds (quail) with my Dad and my Uncle Fred as my instructors. I will hunt most anything that has a legal season and bag limit, but bird hunting is the most nostalgic for me. Wade, each of my guns has an assignment; the old 16 gauge Model 12 is the rabbit gun, the 16 gauge Belgian Auto-5 is for dove and turkey, but this 16 gauge Browning White Lightning, a Valentine Day gift from my wife two years ago, now has exclusive rights to upland birds (classiest gun gets to hunt the classiest game). OH

Dogg, nothing like pheasant for upland game - nice, big birds! Had some fun yesterday (seasons are all over), buddy came by and we shot his 458 WIN MAG, Winchester M70 Super Grade African; that bad boy has some kick (about like 2 oz. turkey loads out of a .670 choke). He took my picture as I was getting ready to fire - I was able to get his picture as the recoil lifted the rifle and rolled him back. What a blast! OH

We returned last night after spending the weekend with my grandsons.
Slept in the tent Friday night in the back yard.
Went walking on a well marked trail and taught my 3 and 5 year old to look for the green paint on the trees to mark the trail.

I love the outdoors!

Well, I love what I see out the Florida room window of my condo.....
I see mallards, hooded mergansers, egrets and on a number of occasions, as I just did, witness a hawk swoop down and snag something to eat. It's actually quite the wildlife refuge....


Now, I take the rest of the day and continue preparation for tomorrow's camping mission with my grandsons and nephew.
This time we are planning on staying in the woods at our campsite. Highs forcasted around 65 and low around 49!

I'm stoked!! I'll have pics too!
