I used to love listening to the old codgers sitting around spinning tales. Back then it was my grandad, dad, uncles and their friends. Royal just made me realize, now we are they. I'm not sure how I feel about that revelation. Glad to be alive I guess.

If you've ever seen the movie, "Sgt. York", when I was a kid there was a little country store that sat a couple of gravel crossroads out in the country from the town I grew up in. That place was straight out of the movie. Wood framed building with worn wood plank floors that creaked when you walked on them and makeshift wood shelving with all the neccesities needed to sustain life in the country. There was even a basket of fresh eggs sitting on the counter!
At any given time, you could go in and there'd be a number of local farmers sitting around in wooden chairs, chewin' their plug t'bacr, spittin' into spitoons, whittlin' on sticks and tellin' tall tales about the old days. We'd buy us a 10 cent soda and candy bar and sit there for hours listening to them spin their yarns. One thing I remember was that they were always excepting of everybody. They may have told a funny tale about one of their neighbors, but you'd never here them speak a bad word about anyone. Even when they talked politics, it still had a positive tone to the conversation. They always seemed to see the best in people, no matter who they were.
That ol' country store is long gone now, and unfortunately, so are most of those excepting ways.

WB I grew up in South Carolina and remember those old country stores well. My wifes first trip down south was in 1976. We pulled in to a old general store/gas station and got out to go into the store while an old-timer gassed us up. My son was around four and the time and prone to wandering off. My wife was amazed at all the thing they carried in that little store and spent quiet a while looking around when she noticed Charlie was gone, She panicked and ran outside to look for him. He was sittin'in a rocker on the porch with the old-timer eatin' apples, both of them in bib overalls, not talking just rocking and eatin' those apples. That picture will live in my mind forever. I'm quite pleased with myself that I somehow managed to stimulate this ongoing trip down memory lane. I'm enjoying it immensely.

And I, too, am now aghast and somewhat flomaxed to realize that I have become one of the old codgers like I used to listen to when I was a youngster.

I belong to a very communicative Special Forces web group and we are euphemistically and variously referred to by the acronyms, FOG, VFOG, and VVFOG's in advancing order of ages.

I will tell you that OG stands for "Old Guy" and the V's stand for "Very".

I'll leave you to your imaginations on the rest.

Somehow, "V's" keep amassing themselves in front of my Old Guy status.

Well, I guess I'm one of the young'uns at 36, lol. But I remember our little store with its coke cooler and all the old men sitting on up turned wooden coke boxes. And I remember the the bologna sandwiches too! The owner must have put over a 1/2 inch slice of meat on those sandwiches, sunbeam white bread, and Miracle Whip. Man one of those with a cold coke was a treat!

Years later I found out why those sandwiches were so good. When no one was looking, one of the bird dogs would jump up and lick the meat slicer! Lol! Of course back then there were no germs, and over all britches legs were sufficient to sanitize a knife, etc... I miss those days.

Absolutely! I never could bring myself to eat a pickled egg, but pickled bologna is mighty fine stuff. Mighty fine. I still buy it at the grocery store.

Well, I certainly remember pickled eggs. The cold refreshing beverage of choice in those days wasn't sodapop though. I don't think Willie's Pool Hall even served sodapop! Those were fun times, but i'm sure glad I out grew 'em.

Anybody ever have a fried pig ear sandwich? Man oh man.

I had my first pickled egg last year, given to me by a traveling nurse from Pennsylvania. Not bad, but I don't like pickled beets and that was essentially what the eggs were in. Not my cup of tea.

Never ate a pickled pig's foot either. I've seen too many pig pens. I'm not eating anything that spent any portion of its earthly life trodding in feces.

That's the same reason I won't eat tripe, chittlings, stomach, liver or kidneys. I cannot eat chicken hearts, either. I look at hearts five days a week, I'm not about to eat one.

Not into eating what were previously simply filtration or extraction systems for the life unit in which it resided.

Eat the cleaned flesh, but not the cleaning system.

Now, I have eaten my fair share of hot dogs, Vienna sausages, and potted meat on crackers. God only knows what goes into those, but ignorance is bliss, as they say.

Dad used to eat fresh Kiszka (blood sausage) for breakfast every Saturday morning. As a kid, the smell of it would bring me to the point of nausea.

Charlie, my grandpa was one pickled pigs foot eatin' machine! Everyday he'd come home for lunch and as often as not, grandma'd have him a plate of those things, a package of crackers and a glass of ice tea waitin'. He'd sit and gnaw on those feet, munch on his crackers, sip his ice tea and watch Melody Matinee. It was probably the only thing that man ever did that I found to be utterly disgusting!

Pickeled pig's feet were great, when you could find them in your neighborhood Mom and Pops grocery store, right out of the big glass crock. 25-cents each with a handfull of saltine crackers. However, today I just can't stomach the packaged PPF in that jelly stuff. YUK!

.....o. k., you asked for it, here's a longer fish story.....i used to fish a lot at ross barnett lake, which was a great bass lake, but was notorious for grinnell(bowfin), every one i would ever hook either broke my line, destroyed the bait, or got off, they have teeth like a shark. finally, i landed one, back in 1970, biggest one i ever hooked(14 lbs.). back then, i couldn't afford to get a bass mounted, so i learned to do it myself, and pretty soon, i was spending more time mounting fish than i was fishing. i had never seen a mounted grinnell, so i decided to mount it- my wife wouldn't let me bring it in the house, so i took it to work and hung it over my drawing board. couple of months later, they had an open house at the plant, all kinds of people touring the office, etc., and this group of game wardens came thru, one of them came over and asked me how much it weighed, and he said,"that's a world record", i thought he was kidding, he told me to get the current field and stream and look it up, and it was!! as he was leaving, he said, "why didn't you eat it", i laughed at him, because they're full of bones, so he starts giving me detailed instr. about how to hang it up by the tail, bleed it,scale it, fillet it, and i'm writing all this down, and he says, get a cedar board same size as the fillet, put it on the board, salt, pepper it, bake it at 350degrees for 30 minutes, take it out ,throw the grinnell in the trash, and eat the board, and he walked off, laughing!!. i felt like a real dummy!!!!.......... ......

Charlie, you've eaten c-rats and you turn up your nose at innards? Any of the stuff you mentioned beats cold ham and muthas.

I tried Menudo and decided I didn't care for rubber bands in a greasy broth. When my grandmother fried chicken (fresh killed), she fried everything, heart, liver, gizzard (my favorite), neck and even the scratchers (feet). There was seldom anything left on the platter.
