It's not too common now, but a few years back, those country
stores would carry quite a selection of other items too.
I can remember having nails, #9 wire, stove pipe, buckets (water & coal),
fishing tackle, enough to rig a good old cane pole, .22 shells and chicken
and hog feed. A lot of the time, at least around home, the store owners
would double as the post master too. I sure long for those days. I think

They still sell that kind of thing here. It's the only store in town.griz1200 wrote:It's not too common now, but a few years back, those country

Grinell or "Grenlin" as my recently deceased brother-in-law called them, are "Blood Fish" They are ancient survivors from practically prehistoric times.
The rivers in the Florida panhandle that Jimmie fished, especially in the backwater swampy areas were full of Grinell.
Jimmie kept a .22 rifle in his boat and every grinnell he got close enough to the boat, he shot.
Lord have mercy, what a nauseating smell. After he shot one, he'd cut the line, crank up the motor and find fresher air and moving water to fish.
Jerry mentioned C-Rations. Not an C-Rat I wouldn't eat and I liked them all. I'd trade other guys out of their Ham & Limas. Some fresh onion and Tobasco Sauce would fix those puppies right up.

Anybody remember this feller? He's always been one of my heros!
I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Ensley in the early 80's. As most know, he was good friends with Sam Walton and when my home towns first Walmart store opened, Mr. Ensley came to sign autographs and talk sporting. I waited half a day for the crowd to thin long enough to actually have a 10 minute visit with him. He truly was as nice as he came across on his TV show and as down to earth as anyone you'd hope to meet. Here's the hat he signed for me.

Great stories, enjoying this too.
That fish reminds me of a snakehead, or at least pictures I have seen of them. Supposedly they're tasty.

Here's another childhood memory. We really did follow these around on our bikes. In and out of the fog, they always claimed it was totally harmless to humans. I've certainly experienced no drain bamage from breathing in all those fumes.
