His shoes nor the shoes of any of the other greats because each and every one of them was unique. Unique voice, unique look and unique style. When George Jones sang, you didn't have to be told it was The Possum. It couldn't be anyone else. Same with Hoyt Axton, Johnny Cash, Ferlin Husky, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubbs, Hank Snow, Brenda Lee, I could go on and on.
Country singers today are cookie cutters as are the pop singers. They all sound alike. Put 'em in a sack and shake 'em and you couldn't tell which one would fall out first.

..i liked him, too, t. j., he was a great singer,especially the stuff he did with "tommy" wynette(as "road hog" used to say)-my all-time favorite was mickey newbury, whose been dead several years now........... i don't even listen to the current bunch of so-called "country" singers...........tjmurphy wrote:Aw Man!! To me, he was the best ever! I used to say that about Hank Sr. but the Possum was the clear winner once he straightened out his life a little.

He had a fantastic career, extending it beyond most of his era. I don't think anyone would have turned down a duet with him. They all turned to pure gold. He truly was "hotter than a two dollar pistol".
