TJ, I haven't used one personally, but I'm looking awful hard at them for my Marlin lever actions. The guys I've talked to who use them say they're great. Of course they won't work for long range precision work, but depending on your dot size, etc... they make for fast target acquisitions, full field of view at all times, you can keep both eyes open, accurate sights out to 100, maybe more.
Think of them like the old peep sight only better. Of course those same guys remind me that you get what ya pay for too. Do don't get the bargain basement el cheapo model.

Thanks Colonel. As far as the cheapo models, I know what you're saying and you're right, you get what you pay for. Will probably do a little more shopping for one of these. I think the one in the pic is $30-$40.

TJ, I've heard good things about some of the Bushnell models. Might be a good place to start.

Well, Bushnell is certainly a name to consider, been doing gun optics for a long time. Going to put it on a Ruger Mini-14. Very nice little gun, but after the first round the sights loosen up. Guess I could use some Lock-Tite but really don't want to go that way.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
TJ, I stuck a similar one on my AK (SAR-1) just for fun. It's good for plinking / shooting tin cans. I think I only paid around $30 for mine. I got it adjusted at the gun range, then shot about 100 rounds through it when I went hog hunting - just plinking (I don't hunt with the AK). Mine is semi-accurate (well, at least as accurate as the AK, which is not very) but it is fun to use. So it just depends on what you are going to use it for. I have Leupold and Bushnell scopes on the rifles I hunt with.

Thanks Unk. I am not a hunter so mine would be used for "plinking" if more ammo ever becomes available.

This is not my rifle. It belongs to a friend.
Personally, I have never seen a finer example of one of these little Quackenbush Safety Rifles.
I don't think I've ever seen one with a wooden stock. All I've seen had an open heavy wire stock.

I added a photogravure of a small boy with his Quackenbush Safety Rifle and what looks like a very nice boys jack knife on a chain.

That is real pretty Charlie! Thanks for sharing. Cool photo of the young man holding one. Those were the days. Now if a kid brought that photo to school, he would be detained and suspended for making terrorist threats or making the other students feel UNCOMFORTABLE in some liberal states. Really sad.
I am so happy to see all the posts on this thread with members taking their kids, grandkids, etc into the outdoors and teaching them such hobbys and skills as hunting, fishing, shooting, camp skills, etc. EDIT: see the Outdoorsman thread for what I am referring to in this last sentence and the following paragraph. I got distracted. Sorry, ranted on the wrong thread but my first statements still stand for this thread. Following statements don't hurt this thread either even though out of the blue. Not sure if having the high score on a video game as most kids do these days will be helpful if push comes to shove and you need to survive. Not to mention the exercise and being outdoors with the family.
My son is a major outdoorsman, as am I. We could survive on the land if need be, not to sound all doomsday or anything. My grandson, at 4 years old (he is four and a half now and I have never once seen this kid cry), went on his first hunt with his Dad for antelope in October. My son bagged one and he watched it being gutted and dressed out. Lots of antelope was on the menu after that so he knows the reward of the hunt. Already have a beautiful knife set for him when he is old enough. Can't wait until he is old enough and the time is right so I can hunt with my son and grandson. Even if we come home empty handed, the time shared and lessons learned (even for me) will be priceless.
Regards, Jerry
