Fixed blade help.

My brother is trying to replace the handles on a Case XX 223-6 and is having trouble removing the pommel any tips.

I had to do a handle on one of these a while back and someone on here told me the pommel was actually cast on to the knife. You can see a plug in the bottom and I drilled into it until most of the material was out. Tapped the pommel off, fixed the handle and plugged the hole with JB Weld. Not a perfect match, but was close. It seems to be very solid. I think I still have that knife and if I can find it I'll post a pic.

That plug in the center/top of the handle is poured lead used to cover (I believe) a nut that holds the pommel in place. Once it is melted out, it shouldn't be too hard to take the rest apart and install new washers. Using JB Weld instead of lead seems like a very good idea since it doesn't require any heat that may damage the new handle material. A new washer kit can be bought from KaBar for around $15 shipped. Then like all leather washered handles, they would need to be ground and polished while in place on the knife. Good luck!

One probably minor caution: using JB instead of lead may change the balance of the knife. If it is enough to notice, this might be a good thing or as bad thing--something to think about.
