Flea market finds, both for $10. The top one is Rex made in Soligen. The bottom one is a Kent which was a low end knife made by Camillus I believe. I never heard of Rex before.

I found two Sailors/Marlin-Spike knives in the midst of a bunch of US Navy uniforms, memorabilia, and other stuff sold by a former Sailor to an antique mall. The Camillus is in excellent condition, has brown Delrin handles, and is etched Deck #2 on the blade and DK #2 on the large bolster. The Schrade Walden appears to be a WW-II vintage and has no etches, but exhibits shrinking composite handles - it is in very good condition. Both knives have nice, full blades and work well (had to oil the S-W to get the lock release working again). The Sailor's memorabilia indicates he served on the USS Iwo Jima LP42, USS Portland LSD37; his newest uniforms (rank of PO, E-6) have a USS Vogelgesang tab sewed on the top of the sleeve. That isn't much, but it is more than I know about most of the old knives I buy. OH

Scott, I don't know how good a deal it was ($59.00 OTD for the two Sailor's knives); however, they are very cool knives, historically significant (to me), and known military knives (always a plus for my collection). I'm happy. OH

I started looking for some info on the ships these knives served on - looks like one was the original USS Iwo Jima; The USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7) is configured to deploy with the V-22 Osprey Tilt Rotor Aircraft. This is symbolized by the attacking Osprey. The previous USS IWO JIMA (LPH 2) was a helo-carrier during the Vietnam Era. The palm fronds commemorate the previous ship and its service in Vietnam. The Iwo Jima Class LPH Amphibious Assault Ship was created in the early 60's. The LPH was ideally suited for amphibious assault by the vertical envelopment method. The ship was designed to carry up to 25 helicopters, a Marine Battalion , weapons, and the equipment to support them. In addition to its mission as a Marine Battalion Landing Team Delivery Ship, the LPH class had also served as an Amphibious Task Force Control Ship, Medical Duty Ship and Mine Countermeasures Support Ship. The Iwo Jima Class had a power plant consisting of two boilers and one geared turbine which turned a single shaft with 22,000 shaft horsepower. Its armament included 3-inch twin barrel guns, the 20mm Vulcan/Phalanx Close-in Weapons System (CIWS), and 50 caliber machine guns. The crew complement consisted of 50 officers, 650 enlisted personnel and up to 2,000 Marine troops.

The USS PORTLAND (LSD-37), an Anchorage-class dock landing ship, was commissioned on 3 OCT 1970. built Quincy, Mass. at the General Dynamics Shipyard, USS PORTLAND spent her career as an Atlantic fleet "Gator Freighter" deploying to the Caribbean, North and South Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. USS PORTLAND was in the Persian Gulf in during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1990-91 and then "surge" deployed in 2003 the Indian Ocean for Operation Enduring Freedom. USS PORTLAND served her country for 33 years, 10 months and 1 day, until decommissioned on 4 AUG 2004. After being laid up at the NISMF at Fort Eustis, VA, the Hulk of the USS PORTLAND was sunk as a target, 25 April 2004 approximately 300 mile off Cape Hatteras.

USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) was a Gearing-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She was named for Rear Admiral Carl Theodore Vogelgesang USN (1869–1927). Vogelgesang was laid down by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation at Staten Island in New York on 3 August 1944, launched on 15 January 1945 by Miss Zenaide Vogelgesang and commissioned on 28 April 1945. Vogelgesang was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 24 February 1982, transferred to Mexico and renamed Quetzalcoatl. She was decommissioned by the Mexican Navy in late 2002. On 24 November 2006, the ship was scuttled to form an artificial reef.

a fiberglass based laminate. Layers of fiberglass cloth are soaked in resin and are compressed and baked. The resulting material is very hard, lightweight, and strong. Surface texture is added in the form of checkering. G-10 is an ideal material for tactical folders because of its ruggedness and lightweight. It is usually available in black.

Found this well used Kutmaster/Utica NY/Made in USA at a flea market. Main blade had several nicks in the edge and the secondary is all but gone and rides a little proud in the frame. Cleaned it a little and dressed up the main blade. This one feels right nice in the hand and pocket, it is 3 5/8" closed. It appears that the blades had some sort of plating as there are a few patches of it left on the blades, like on some of the old nickel plated S&W revolvers that have most of the plating worn off. Why was plating done on knives like this? The bone handles are well worn and very smooth.
