I agree with Jerry. We were hitting targets at 400 meters in Basic Training.

The 500 yard line was the easiest shootin' at Parris Island! Once you got your dope on your rifle all you had to do was lay there and sqeeze 'em off. M-14, prone position, 500 yards was a piece of cake. It sure didn't take a Drill Instructor and a coach on the rifle range long to get shooters "squared away", so I'll second Jerryd's motion of "horse feathers" (that's mildly put)! Treefarmer

To qualify with the M-14 rifle in the Marine Corps:

200 yard line
10 rounds slow fire - off-hand (standing) position
10 rounds rapid fire - sitting position (two magazines, 5 rounds each)

300 yard line
5 rounds slow fire - sitting position
5 rounds slow fire - kneeling position
10 rounds rapid fire - prone position (two magazines, 5 rounds each)

5oo yard line
10 rounds slow fire - prone position

Total possible score - 250

0-189 Non-qual (unacceptable)
190-204 Marksman (Toilet Seat)
205-219 Sharpshooter
220-250 Expert


While I'm on the subject, it's a magazine not a clip.

These are clips. The first is for charging an AK-47 magazine (the same style clip is used to charge the M-14 magazines). The second is to load an M-1 (no separate magazine).

That is a bit of a different situation.

A rack-grade M14 with issue ammo will typically group about 2-3 minutes of angle; that means that at 500 yards, average group sizes would run about 10-15". Reports are that the TrackingPoint rifle/system typically goes under 1 MOA (averaging groups less than roughly 5" at 500 yards).

In the case of this rifle, no need to get sight dope as it is programmed in. No sight adjustment needed, so (with the 300 mag version), the shooter could go from 500 yards to 50 feet then out to 1,000 yards--all without touching the scope (other than adjustments for wind deflection, if needed). No problems with variances between ammo lots, as the ammo is loaded for the individual rifle (it has to be, in order for the scope to have the ballistics in that individual rifle).

Perhaps more importantly, no need to estimate range as the system does it for you. Coupled with the trigger setup that won't let the rifle fire until the sights are aligned with the designated target, that eliminates 3 of the 4 big headaches of teaching marksmanship. The shooter still has to steady the rifle, but sandbags and a shooting rest can take care of that. A decent instructor who knew the system should be able to teach a new shooter enough to qualify Expert in an afternoon.

All in all, it is an interesting--and perhaps inevitable--development. I don't think I'd want one, but I'd love to spend an afternoon playing with one.

I just read a bit on a closed SF website about this gun from someone that has been following its development for several years.

Appears the Israelis have someting similar.

The technology utilized is much more sophisticated than that article I posted indicates.

And the gun is most useful on moving targets.

As I understand it, you line up your shot, the computer alerts you in the scope's optics when to pull and hold the trigger. As you hold the trigger, it is blocked from full travel. Then you simply wave the gun about slightly. When the shot is perfect, the trigger releases, the round is fired and a hit is scored.

Evidently, the computer accounts for all variables.

I recently read Stephen Hunter's book I, Sniper. The plot of the book was laid out around a rifle scope very similar to this unit. The scope was 'computerized' and did all the work for you.
