granny gear

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

granny gear

Post by trey »

Does anybody know where the term 'granny gear' originated? The first time I heard it, I was in a truck and the hippie driving it powered out of the mud by putting into low gear and said 'thank god for granny'. Needless to say, I turned around to see if his grandma was pushing us out.

Around here lots of old trucks had a double low first gear that was never used unless you needed to start a big load or needed to idle out of some tough mud.

We either called it granny gear (for just the reason Jerry started) or bulldog.

Because like a granny, that gear doesn't have many teeth.
