Owls was over to visit.

Post by knifetime »

This guys has been around for about 2 weeks now. They git on the ground and on the back porch and don't seem to mind us at all. The fence is about 10 feet from where I'm taking the pics thats how close they will let you git and they don't seem to mind it a bit. There is 6 baby's and mom. Mom stays in the big tree and watches the baby's. They git down on the ground and wounder around.
I wish I could take some better pics.
BTW- I'm told there Screech owls.

That's a pretty nice experience there, knifetime.
I guess she doesn't have a whole lot of choice but stay there, given her brood is there.

Yes, you are very right. She gets very nervous win we are out back so we are trying to just leave them alone and keep the dog's and cat's away from the back of the house. They sure a a joy to look at.

I'm wondering if they are able to get back up in the tree, to avoid predators at night.

Yep they do real good. They come down every mourning and stay out until about 10:00 Am and thin up in the tree they go and we don't see them until the next mourning.
We don't git many predators just cats and dog's"I leave in a small town" but my yard is fenced in so it keeps the dogs out and I have 2 Bulldogs that run loos most of the time and all the smart cat's avoid my house.

Glad you guy's are getting a kick out of them to. ::tu::

Some interesting reading here.

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Portals/9/pdf/pub423.pdf

The babies are probably searching and eating insects.
I got this quote off the internet.

Screech owls prefer small rodents, worms and lizards but will also hunt for large nocturnal insects such as moths and crickets, which are more prevalent. Large terrestrial arthropods such as spiders, scorpions and centipedes are also commonly consumed by screech owls, according to the Owl Pages. Baby screech owls capable of flight will eat small insects as they find them. Large insects are usually brought back to the nest, where they are stored for later or torn apart for easier immediate consumption.

We had a little family of screeches in the back yard last year. They were so cool to watch. they would swoop from yard to yard, always below the trees and between the houses.
I go outside in the evenings now and listen for that tell-tale purring coo, but they havent been back yet. I miss em.
