A gardening knife handled in sambar stag.

Hi everyone,

Not posted in a while but thought I would post some pictures of this knife I have just recently finished,

The handle is sambar stag, it was a complete piece which I cut in 2 to keep the original shape and feel to the knife.

The blade is a old "HAND FORGED" carbon steel blade, I found a dozen or so a few years a go from an old sheffield cutlery work before it was demolished and I've had them sat in my workshop waiting for the right knife to go in,
The blade has a square end tang, which makes it easier to open and close, and has my mark on the tang.

The knife has brass webbs with nickel silver bolsters, end cap and pins,

After I have ground the blade, I use a hard wheel with leather fitted all round and dress the wheel with a fine grit, I then go onto a felt wheel dressed with a finer grit and start applying a head to the wheel which I keep building up by putting compound on and fat, after this wheel I use a leather wheel dressed with a grit fine like flour, and this to has a head built up over time and I put on a mix of different compounds and fat, the blade now is virtually shiny, so I go onto a soft polishing mop and gently run the blade across which brings out a beautiful mirror finish to the steel.

That is very similar to the way it was done in the "old days".

Your finish is very pleasing to my eye compared to what I see some "Custom" makers using for a finish on their knives, most have an unfinished look to them with the sanding scratches still on the blade, some probably like them this way The mirror finish is hard to beat

That stag even looks like the old stuff they used in Germany.
I have some that looks similar that came from the Henkel's factory.

Thank you I'm happy that people like my knives, as much as I love making them, every knife I make I use all traditional methods, which i have learnt from little mesters in sheffield, (most of which have retired) the way they where years ago.
