KERSHAW KNIVES

Kershaw began its foray into the knife business sometime during 1974. The company was originally based in Portland Oregon, but most early knives were manufactured in Japan. The first US manufacturing plant was opened in 1997 & the company currently offers knives made in the U.S., Japan, & China. Pete Kershaw (an ex Gerber salesman) started the business.

Jerry,
I haven't found a thing on this knife that would be thought of as a blemish, other than the Xs. I don't think there is one.
For some reason ($) they have decided to sell at a reduced price. I assume to compete in the lower end market. That's a wild guess.
I paid $29.95, including shipping, for the knife.

I've wondered about the Kershaw seconds too maybe it's the blades weren't hardened to spec's hard to say I could never see anything wrong with the one's I've bought either--sure seems to be a lot of them out on the market for some reason--might be a marketing gimmick people see the X's and relate it to being a quality built knife

Having dealt with Kershaw as a retail store for 10 years or so, (1980s & early 1990s) I know they have extremely high standards, both in their product quality and in their customer service. It is not surprising to me that one cannot find the fault with a Kershaw second! Schrade was the same way, you can rarely find a problem with a Schrade that has been XXed or the stamp ground off.
I have NEVER had a problem getting a knife repaired or replaced at Kershaw, either as a Kershaw Dealer or as an individual. They often go above and beyond the call of duty and have even given me extra replacement parts at no charge. I once took in a knife that was broken for a replacement. The pattern had been discontinued long ago and no parts were available. The original knife was about $25-$30. Since they could not replace it, I was given the choice of several knives all the way up to a retail price of about $70. Needless to say I left quite satisfied with their customer service!

I will say however, I have never tried to warranty a XXed out knife. They are sold as seconds and have no warranty.
I have also not had an XXed out Kershaw break on me either. ::shrug::

I have a XX out Kershaw Damascus Leek which I bought at the factory sale several years ago, (it is in the next to last pic I posted above). I have carried it for years without any problems. I happened to talk to the Kershaw plant manager when I bought it, he told me the story behind it and why it was XXed out. They had a local company here in Oregon make the blades and heat treat them. When they got the blades the contractor had used the wrong steel other than what Kershaw has ordered. They worked a deal with the company to remake the blades and to prevent themselves or their contractor from having a lose the whole price of the blades, Kershaw put the blades in the inexpensive ss frame and sold them to recover cost of the blades (and frames/labor, etc.) I think back then I paid under $30.

Essentially my knife is perfect, just not the steel Kershaw had specified in their order.

I have seen some pieces in the factory sales that were damaged, XXed and sold "as is." Also some that were repaired under the warranty and replaced by Kershaw. The repaired knife is often sold at the sale, but, IIRC, they are not XXed, just marked as warranty refurbished knives and sold at a good discount.

I've heard that Bear & Son sells their overruns as seconds. Makes me wonder if Kershaw may do something similar. I've had a couple of blems and only found something on one that could have qualified it for that category.

Picked up a Twocan today. What a neat little knife. Open the first blade, you have a knife. Open the second blade, you have scissors. They're only 2-3/4" closed, including the carabiner. They're made in Japan and they don't bring much money. $20 or less depending on where you buy it. Kershaw sharp of course.

Those of you who know me pretty well, know my affinity for Kershaw knives, especially the wood handled ones from the Officer Ranch series introduced in the early 1980s. I was working in a cutlery store when they were introduced and liked them immediately. Over the years I have EDCed several patterns from the Officer Ranch series including the DWO & the Black Horse. But my two favorites are the Wild Turkey and the Big Joe. I still EDC a Wild Turkey (#4150), usually one I have customized with bone handles.

There was a variation of the Wild Turkey that came with a ATS34 blade (IIRC), but it had a stainless steel handle. I bought one but the handle did not feel good to my hand, so I gave it to my son who collects metal handled knives (among others).
Today I found a new Wild Turkey on ebay, one with the traditional handles, but with a Damascus steel blade, The Damascus has a VG10 steel core.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kershaw-Wild-Tu ... true&rt=nc

I can't wait until I gat this bad boy, put some bone handles on it and then I will have a new Wild Turkey EDC! ::ds::

Early to mid 1980s for sure! Those were good knives, solid with really good steel. ::tu::
I think Kershaw used a lot of AUS-8A back then. Better, IMHO than the AUS-6 they use a lot now.

I think they stopped making those because they have a lot of metal in them, so they are heavy and more expensive. I think that knife new was between $35-$40, circa 1983.

There were several models built with the wood inlaid handles; some had a single blade, 2 or 3 had two blades and there may even have been one with 3 blades, but I don't recall for sure, that was a long time ago!

Here is a pic of the Damascus Wild Turkey I promised:
Kershaw Wild Turkey Damascus a.jpg
I love this knife & have had it in my pocket since I got it!

These are a couple I got in the 1980s when I managed the cutlery store.
The 5200 is one of the early models Kershaw made.
The DWO is part of the Officer Ranch Series. It was originally black but I changed the cover.
Kershaw DWO & #5200.jpg
The Lil' Zane is another of the Officer Ranch series. A great key chain knife!

This is my wife's favorite flexable fillet knife. I lost this one to her.
I ought this one when I saw they had moved fillet knife production to China.
This was one of the last I got of the Japanese fillet knives.

They're like potato chips, Squirrel. You can't have just one, especially if your first one has the SpeedSafe feature. If you ever break down and get one, may I suggest you start off with a Leek or a Scallion.

There are tons of patterns to choose from, most of which are single blade. If the SpeedSafe feature doesn't get you, the "Kershaw sharp" blade will. It's almost like carrying a straight razor in your pocket.

Difficult to hold the knife and take the picture but, yes dogg, I believe it does angle back slightly.

Feels to me like a very comfortable, natural grip.

Been awhile since anyone added to this thread...so...here's one that I haven't seen posted before...It's an original Kershaw Speedform (as opposed to the Speedform II) with Elmax steel. It was once named Blade Magazine's "Knife of the Year" (I forget which year). A little big for pocket carry, but great for the collection.
