If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

This is the message EBay sent.
eBay told us:

“The eBay system is undergoing scheduled general maintenance which has been previously announced. During this maintenance period, certain eBay features may be intermittently unavailable or slow and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”

El Reg understands that the general maintenance, which was also expected to affect its company Paypal, was supposed to happen between 23:00 hours and 01:00 Pacific Time.

It is now 01:30 in that part of the US. ®

Why, that's just crazy talk. ::disgust::

Speaking of which, back in the days of real mail when my parents and my grandparents were 35 miles, as the crow flies, and the Big Wabash river apart they would communicate through the mail (long distance calls were EXPENSIVE back then and besides my grandparents only had one of those old wall phones. "Hello, Mable. Ring up John Frikenfrack for me, will ya.) Mom and grandma did all the writing of course. Since my grandparents were more poor than we were (looking back, it's hard to believe that was possible) my grandma wrote on penny postcards, which I believe were two cents at the time. That woman had a tiny but perfectly legible script and she could get more on a post card than anyone I've ever seen. I swear she could write the great American novel on two of 'em.

.......I remember when I was in high scrool(1951-55), we had one dial phone, it was in a cubby hole in the wall in the hall, 3 digit phone no.,4 ft. cord on the phone with the phone book on a cord, there was a small stool to sit on while you talked-those were the days!!......I still have the phone and the stool, may flush all these "atomic" phones and put that one back in the hall!!!!............. ::tu:: ...............

And a party line. We had a party line (when we had a phone) up until we moved to Harrisburg IL where I started high school. When we got our first private line, I thought we were fartin' through silk. ::nod::

Telephone company owned the phone and they were built like a Mack truck. I don't think an atomic explosion could have destroyed one. I wonder how many times they were used as a weapon of opportunity during a crime of passion.

Edit: Tommy -- I don't know if modern telephone circuits will still work with a rotary phone. You could answer a call but probably couldn't make a call.

Cutty -- Have a little comfort in knowing you're not the only one. Found this while looking for something else.

"Windows 8 sucks."

"Speaking of which – it is next to impossible to turn off your system in Windows 8. Seriously. From the desktop interface you have to go to the weird margin pop-over menu and dig four actions down just to power down your system. There is a whole ecosystem of Q&As on the Web on how to turn off your damn computer."

If you want to read the entire diatribe, it's here: http://insiderlouisville.com/news/2013/ ... windows-8/
