Three from the flea market this morning. The top one is Skandia Tools, in the last picture the top one is Kutmaster, Utica N.Y., the bottom one says Utica Co. Czechoslovakia which seems kind of odd.

That's a nice knife Joe. I have two of them. The first I got off Risner. The second was a BIN on eBay that had just been listed for what I thought was a very reasonable price, so I snatched it up. Excellent allocation of discretionary funds.

I'm waiting on the mail for this one. It appears to never have been used and the aluminum handles are dent-free, which isn't the case on a lot of these. Button and kickspring both work too. Eric

It is an early switchblade with the blade style being the "one-armed man's knife". Between the Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the general hazards of the times, there were a whole of amputees in the country by the 1890s. My Levine's Guide dates the Pressbutton Knife Co. of Walden, NY to a 1892 date of inception. The company remained in business until 1923. It was started by George Schrade, who invented the automatic switch mechanism, and eventually combined with the rest of Schrade Cutlery Co. Switchblades of one style or another were produced until 1957 when the US Congress outlawed them after seeing too many Sal Mineo movies.

In 1903 George Schrade sold his interest in these patents and any other rights to the production of these items to the Walden knife Co. In 1904 he and his brothers opened the Schrade Knife company ( also in Walden ). These were two seperate companies. Schrade introduced then new techniques for an improved version of automatic knives he also invented several new machines to increase efficiency and increase speed of manufacture. While this company produced many types of pocket knives the automatic was the mainstay of there business. Walden knife produced the Press button line until 1924. The knife in question is called a civil war veterans knife. It has embossed aluminum handles ( which were a top of the line material then ). Even though it is nick named the Civil war veterans knife or veterans knife it was not made until 30 years after the civil war. These are often found with engravings or tang markings of prostetic companies which would buy or contract them from the Walden knife company and sell them under there ( prostetics ) companies name. The knife is an automatic and has a cutting edge on one side and fork on the other and of course may be opened with one hand.
