I posted some answers to the Shaw Liebs on the other thread you started regarding them. I also wanted to post some pics of this display of ( ULSTER ) Schrade Walden Pearls. These under this tang were only made from 56 till 59. They were made in Ellenville with old pearl handle stock from the Walden factory until the supply ran out. These are in ( for the most part ) NEW old stock condition . These are among the rarist of Schrade pearl knives since they were only made for 3 years in Ellenville after the Walden move. They are in a correct for the period . SW-25 display case. LT

While digging around getting the pearls out i saw this SW-25 vendor brochure so I thought I would post it to go along with what I said. When I did this paper work from 1954 fell out. So I am posting pics of it as well. Notice automatics were still legal. The hunters pride model was I think 36 dollars . That is of course for a dozen. There is one that is or was just on the bay that the last time I looked was near 400 and climbing. Anyway here is some info for those who enjoy this stuff. If someone really wants a scan let me know and I will try to Get R Done. LT

Showing off!
Found some reasonable knives in the last couple of weeks. After years of looking at ebay auctions, and still getting disappointed once in a while, sometimes you get lucky. There is only one worn blade in this lot of three knives, the rest are full. Being a lover of patina (I have quite a bit myself
) these knives I find quite pleasing, and I'm happy to add them to my preservation collection of older Schrades and Ulsters.

PEACH SEED JIG!
Speaking of jigging, I'm still not clear on the history of peachseed jigging. Where did it originate? Ulster or Schrade? When??
How long was it used?? Does color tell us anything?? I've seen it light and dark, reddish brown, and greenish brown.
I've seen it on Ulsters, Schrade Cuts, Schrade Waldens, and various contract knives.
I've asked some of these questions before, but it would be nice to gather the info, however tenuous, and put together as much as is known!
Then we could all be wrong together
!
Seriously, I recognize some answers will be opinion, but please tell us what you know!!

Charlie,
I believe I'll probably need some clarification from LT on this, but I seem to recall that Schrade used the peachseed bone from around 1920 to 1955 in Walden, then (as I learned from LT's previous post), from '56 to '59 in Ellenville, after which they changed over to delrin. I believe this switch was necessitated, or at least accelerated, by the demise of their supplier, the Rogers Bone Company, in a massive fire in 1955.
I'm not sure the bone can be dated by color alone, but I could be wrong, although there was a deep red man made peachseed (cell?, plastic?) that came out at some point as well. I believe it can be found on some of the Schrade-Walden rigging knives.

Peach seed began with Schrade you will notice it is an even almost mathmatical form of jigging that is because even if done partically by hand it incorporates a jig which is mechanical. That is to say the hand tool is either touched to a revolving piece of stock or later the stock to a revolving metal jig. Later this was all done mechanically prior to this American or Rodger jigging was mainly used. This was done by hand and is a more random versus mathematical pattern. Schrade began using peachseed when he left pressbutton ( Walden Knife ) . Press button jigged by hand hense the more Rodgers types of handles. Schrade almost from the start went with the peach seed because of the new techniques Schrade implemented when he started in 03. There never has been a question modern peachseed is a Schrade innovation. The connection to Ulster is obvious especially with Baer taking over Ulster and Schrade in the fortys. Also after Schrade started most other companies started using mechanical jigging both partialy and fullyand therefore more mathematical patterns evolved. Just as partial peachseed jigging by hand produced variations some slight some more pronounced. The replacement of metal revolving jigs ( as they wore) also produced variations due to the technical inability of making jigging dies exactly the same over the years. The most pronounced variations came in the 50tys after the Ellenville move ( when most of the old Schrade Cut Jigs were replaced, after in some cases being used for 45 years, however due to the changes in technology future Schrade peachseed jigging became much more uniform ( if a bit different from the original). It should be noted that today prejigged handle slabs ( from companies selling them) are much more uniform however color has always been a wide variant, the bone is dyed while in the case of delrin it is usually fairly easy to get a relative constant as in OT's or UH lines bone is a natural material and aside from the actual dyes has other variants such as density, types of bone ect. As far as coloring the bone it is merely a matter of the dye. Green bone has always been the most sought after by collectors that is because knives used to be sold by the dozen . In each dozen they would put only one green bone. Many dealers would remove the green and place a premium on them when they sold them it was simply supply and demand . However the practice has made the green highly sought to this day even though the original reason is long forgotten . ( except by fanatics like me ). To this day rodgers bone is still the favorite jigging style in the USA it can now be reproduced by machine but it is not the same unlike the original careful inspection shows a pattern and it is still a pain in the butt to do . I will attach some pics of the old press buttons and the early peachseed. I hope this in part helps with some of the questions. PS Later Schrade under Schrade Walden and then just Schrade, in trying to keep with the peachseed concept started making composition then later delrin handles which were molded with a jigged pattern. examples also attached.
