The man definitely laughed, although possibly just at the irony of it all.
Really, when they found the kit in the garage they should have just shooed it back into the yard and left it alone. Mother rabbit would have found it and if the hawk got it anyway, no ones' hearts would have been broken.
They had had it for a week.
Hawk was probably gathering food for its hatchlings.

I read someplace one time that you can tell the difference between the hunters and the hunted by the placement of their eyes. Prey animals have their eyes on the sides of their heads. Hunters have their eyes in the front of their heads looking forward.

Bummer for the bunny anyway.
I got to see a hawk snatch up a large rabbit one time driving down the road and it was a awesome sight. Just the shear power of the hawk was amazing. This was no small bunny it was what we call a woods rabbit and I'm sure it out wayed the hawk.
