Grandson Knives

For those of use who make or customize knives there are few things nicer than to be able to share that experience with someone else, especially if that someone is someone close to you.

My youngest son loves to come over to the house & work on knives with me when he isn’t working. He also brings me nice wood for knives, as he is a hardwood floor installer. Lately he has been working a lot and we haven’t had any shop time together.

My wife & I have our grandsons over in the summer to spend a bit of time. That time has now arrived. Between my wife & I we have 13 grandchildren, 9 of which are boys. While all nine are not old enough to make knives (yet), the 4 oldest are. Last week we had 2 of the grandsons here & another one this week.

Here are the knives from last weekend. Both started out as a Camillus TL-29 & ended up being single blade knives. Just right for a young man.

Some time back CCBill had sent me some very old Osage Orange wood. It is beautiful. Thanks Bill. My pictures do not do the knife justice. The wood has a depth to it that reminds me of Koa wood.
The other knife has green jigged bone handles on it.
Sorry that my pics came out so poorly. I will try to get a better pic of the green bone knife.

All the work on these were done by my grandsons. I just assisted & advised. They are ages 13 & 15. We have a 14 year old grandson here this week & he is making a nice fixed blade. I will post pics when he finishes it.

The third grandson of this summer's rotation (Brandon) just left. He kept me busy. We went pawn shop shopping for old knives a couple times and he picked up a 156OT which he re-handled.
I picked up several knives as well, the biggest score for me was an LB8 in good condition for $25 and a near new LB7 for $20.

Brandon is 14 and lives in Montana where he likes to hunt. He made a hunting knife from a blank I had laying around from Texas Knife Makers Supply. He did the brass work, put a Brazilian Cherry wood handle on it with red liners.
The 165OT he re-handled in ebony with a white liner.

Those look great AND I know you guys had the time of your lives. My son is on his way back to Ohio and we treasure our time in the shop.

We watched a couple knife making DVD's, I explained a couple things and turned him loose. Only way to learn, just get in there and do it.

I just know you had a great time too.

Well, the grandson who made the Osage Orange handled re-do of the Camillus TL-29 is back for a couple more weeks.
We went out shopping for a knife for him to rebuild. He found a LB-7 in fairly rough shape for about $10.

I had a 7OT blade that would fit it, so we put a much better blade in it. I would have replaced the lock bar, except the pivot pin holes are in different locations.

He decided he wanted to put some bone handles & chose some blue jigged bone that I had dyed & jigged myself. It came out pretty good, considering that he got tired of sanding. I think the problem is that there is no controller (like a video game) on sandpaper. If sandpaper had a controller, this knife would shine like the sun! (He is quite fond of video games). Anyway, he did a nice job for a young fellow.

The bolsters are much shinier than the pics show.
