Man , that's a big ol' critter! Our Florida deer are big if they reach 150 lbs., how much does a moose weigh. Wouldn't have to kill but one of them for a years worth of meat. Interesting picture .

Well, that's a 2 1/2 year old cow, kinda small at 540 lbs.

In NH, they have a lottery for the moose hunt. Only a certain amount of permits are given every year. It's kinda like winning the regular lottery. Then you are given a certain grid spot to hunt in with others. You have to scout your territory, get permissions from land owners,etc. It's no guarranty that you will get anything.

Been reading all the hunting post--decided to go sit in the woods and deer hunt for the ""first time,in 30 years __ I use to hunt every year,___we even camped for the first week !!!!,___ then got away from hunting & into bass fishing __________

enjoyed the 4 1/2 hours spent in the woods watching the squirrels play--also seen a very large Hawk swoop by__but no deer__my buddy has killed a 6pt. & 8pt. , from this stand already this year, ___ he has seen a couple of big deer, so I'm looking for those ____ a few pic's of the area in his back yard,I'm watching, that is baited with corn & peanut-butter_________he has a ground blind,with a nice padded chair set up and sitting there hunting, is like watching ""TV"" at home !!! __________will report,if I do happen to bag one

Way to go Monk! Good to see an old hunter getting back to his roots. ....Not that I'm saying you're old or anything....just that you used to be a hunter and now you are getting back to it....ya know what I mean


This is just a pic of a little stand of white birch that I came across today...kind of unique in that they are on a rather large island surrounded by swampy marsh with no other birch on it at all...just this lonely stand all by themselves. Could see them through the woods from quite a distance, they really stick out amongst the oaks and elms and cedars.. (nothing spectacular I know...I just have a fondness for trees)

Yes indeed Scott...nice thing about birch bark is it burns even when wet! I did a demo on that for my kids this past summer while camping...after a night of heavy rain the next morning we got our fire going again using fatwood splinters and birch bark!

Awesome pix, gard! I grilled some tenderloin with peppers and onions for a bud who was visiting about 2 months back and it was great, hope to be getting some more at the end of this month.

Garddogg56 Question for you. I am thinking about trying the deer heart this year, if I am lucky enough to harvest a deer. Is there a special way to prepare and cook the heart? How about the liver? Jeff

Jearl,we cook'em right there in the wood afta we harvest them,I slice the heart in 3/8ths get rid of clots and clean well season to taste..liver I cut in strips and cook with onion and peppers slooooow..In Maine the state has a warning on consumption of Deer liver and native fresh water fish..Good luck this season

Good lord.....why in the world would there be warnings on eating too much venison and freshwater fish?

Venison heart came up on an outdoor forum here in Florida a year or so back. Apparently most folks were surprised that heart and liver were not fed to the dogs ! We did a pictorial tutorial that I would like to share with our fellow AAPK deer hunters that don't salvage the heart of the deer.
Pics will show a whole heart, which needs to have the "plumbing" on the top side removed. Then we cut it into 1/4" slices beginning at the little end. Season with what ever you like, we use seasoning called Everglades Seasoning, it's a mixture of salt , pepper ,and spices. It's optional to dredge it in flour. Place it in the hot peanut oil for about 1 minute and 30 seconds. Ready to eat ! Same drill with venison liver, clean, slice, season and fry. The timing is critical, the longer it cooks, the tougher it gets !

You might be pleased with this additional bit of meat if you give it a chance!

I used to carry a couple plastic bread bags in my bibs just for the heart & liver--it's crazy how many people leave it in a gut pile---I fry mine pretty much the same way but cut it in nugget size pieces

Back in the 40's thru the 80's the papermill use to discharge large amount of mercury into the rivers up here in Maine the medical community says thats why the cancer rate is so high in Maine ..Pigsticker;to me other than the back-straps and tenderloins that the best part of the deer ::nod::Oh yea Scott thats JUST the liver
