Natural light is always best, try window light if you can't get out side.

Tim -- Everything okay down in your neck of the woods? You're a whole lot closer to Washington/Peoria/Pekin than I am.

We were lucky here Jerry, one tornado south of town and several to the north.
A lot of trees down but no real damage. 80 mile per hour gust!!
I am glad you were north of it. I hope Ken is ok!

Glad to hear you're okay. Don't even know where Ken is these days. Do you suppose he's still in Bloomington/Normal?

Re: Knife Photography
How about one of those fluorescent fixtures with full spectrum natural sunlight bulbs? That's what I'm thinking about for the basement. Whip me up a light box with some plastic pipe and a white bed sheet, then hang a flourescent fixture over it. If I need more light, get a couple of those clamp on lights.

Re: Knife Photography
Remember that shiny bolsters and blades will reflect whatever is inside the box, like the cardboard corners. I have tried something similar to this and ended up stapling a plastic shower curtain liner to the inside of the box. A shower curtain is the best material I've found for diffusing light, next to whatever is used on the commercial light boxes, but it does require a strong light. Using tissue paper is a new idea, and has strong possibilities like a single frame covered with tissue paper for each small weak light (flashlight?) used in an otherwise dark room. The curved cardboard backdrop is a good idea. And most cameras today have excellent automatic light correction features that work on most light sources. I used to set my camera on fluorescent, then forget to change it when going outside in sunlight. Finally, I just left it set on auto white balance and it works great 98% of the time.
A clear conscience is usually a sign of a bad memory.

Re: Knife Photography
Hey guys
I never tried using a light box before
I for one like to see the light in the picture. It feels more like catching a moment than taking a picture.
I like it when you get that sharp glimmer that makes it seem like there's something happening other than just taking a picture.
Same with shadows. Sometimes the things you can't see can really add to the photo.
