BAD KA-BAR info on title page

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

BAD KA-BAR info on title page

Post by Gunsil »

I am new to AAPK and my specific main interest in knife collecting is old Union Cut Co fixed blade knives. I just looked at the title heading for this category and am appalled at the bad info!! KA-BAR did NOT evolve from the Tidioute Cutlery Company. It evolved from the Brown Brothers Razor Co of little Valley, N.Y. Brown Brothers changed their name to Union Cut Co, and purchased the Tidioute Cutlery and moved their operations there. They then moved to Olean, N.Y. around 1911 and continued as Union Cut Co until 1951 when the company name was changed to KA-BAR Cutlery Co. In 1923 Union Cut adopted the trademark KA-BAR. They also produced knives marked Olean Cut Co, Olcut, and Keenwel. I hope the moderators here read this and change the bad info on the title heading.

Gene -- I forwarded your information in a PM to Bryan (forum owner) and Dale (orvet - super-mod or what ever he calls himself these days  ) One of them should be able to address your issue.

I'll be glad to change it, but would like to have a reference or member consensus to back any new description.

Here is how Ka-Bar presents its history...

http://www.kabar.com/history

It states...

"In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a group of 38 men form a Limited Partnership, known as Tidioute Cutlery Company, to manufacture and sell cutlery. The formation is now widely considered to be the beginnings of KA-BAR Knives, Inc."

The gentlemen has most of his facts right, but Bryan is also correct that his title is exactly what KABAR uses. In fact they didn't even know the history until I came along and informed them. KABAR actually helped pay for my first book.

Who are we to tell KABAR to change what they believe to be their founding date? They can do what they like I guess. If they choose to use the first Tidioute Cutlery as it, then so be it.

Mind you, KABAR uses that because that's when they first MADE knives and razors, prior to that "The Brown Razor Co and Brown Bros and Union Razor LVNY" they had someone else (Cattaraugus and others) make them for them. THERE'S the difference. So if they say it is when they made cutlery, that would be correct. But using the Tidioute date of 1898 really wasn't them either. MARKETING AT ITS FINEST LOL

Hope this helps.

I know Paul Tooj?? Ka-Bars historian spent most of the weekend at Gunsils table at the last Case show. I am pretty sure he learned a lot from Gene and they talked about doing a book, which I would love to see!
