SCHRADE SHIELDS

Schrades have so many different shields. I'd like to know the names of the different styles such as the Uncle Henry signature shield.

I have looked at a lot of books for agreement between them on the names of common shields.
Some writers will agree on what to call some shields, but by in large I have not found a lot of agreement between writers.

As to the Uncle Henry signature shield, I have only heard it called an "Uncle Henry Shield."

Bernard Levine in LG4 shows only 3 types of shields, the crest, gimp & bar shield.
The following is a quote defining the shield: "A decorative escutcheon, usually of metal, inlaid in a knife’s handle. There are hundreds of varieties, but most are variations of the bar, the crest and the gimp.”



The best chart I can find is in a book by Roy Ritchie & Ron Stewart.

I would agree with the basics of the chart but the last 2 examples in the oval column are commonly referred to as gimp shields by other writers.
They don’t even have a category for the gimp shields.

If I were working from their chart I would add a column for Gimp shields and edit the oval column to include oval & circle.
There are many beautiful old shields that are very intricate in design that do not fit easily into these simple categories.

Thanks for the chart. I've heard a lot of different names used for the various shields on Schrades from the Empire shield on the Heritage smooth bones to the Federal shield on some Schrade Waldens. Now can someone explain to me the difference between a stockman and a rancher? Collecting Schrades is certainly an educating experience.
