Nothing much more exciting that when that deer steps out into view and you settle it into the crosshairs.............hold your breath and squeeze the trigger slowly.

I'm shooting a Browning BAR 270, with 130gr.Nosler Partition bullets**__both dropped in their tracks,with "neck shots"

______ Jerry, the longest shot was 80yds (we just don't have all that "open" country that yall have

--so very seldom shoot one, over 100yds***

Congrats on the deer Monk! Glad to see you gettin' back after 'em! Which one of your GEC's got to see some field work?

I had the chance to get out into the beautiful October woods this week and do a little bit of squirrel hunting. Weapon of choice was an old Ithaca 12 gauge that belonged to my wife's grandpa. I know some folks frown on shotguns for bushytails, but I love carrying this old gun, very nostalgic for me

Carrying a great American firearm, means I've got to carry a great American knife too of course! My old faithful Case 6375 in CV and burnt stag bone scales got the call...

Even though it was a windy day and the trees were swaying pretty heavily, I managed to bag three nice sized Fox squirrels that were all about the same size as this one..

The Case did the job nicely on the field work...

So I lightly floured up the pieces, browned them in the skillet, added some red onions, garlic, salt and pepper, covered them with milk, put on a lid and let them slow simmer for about an hour until they were nice and tender. The gravy thickened up nicely...finished with a couple healthy shots of hot sauce. Good eats!

....and who says the spey blade on a stockman is a useless blade?? I find it to be a great little skinner blade, works like a champ when ya don't want or need a sharp tip for those little detail tasks!

Nothing wrong with using a shotgun for squirrels, a lot safer than a .22

PS*** I took the deer's to a processing house ,but did use my GEC to split the back leg shin for tagging

Mike, I grew up with an Ithaca 37. All my buddies with Winchester model 12s would ridicule me while they searched for their shell casings. That 37 is one sweet gun and puts those casings right at your feet. Great pics.

Phil, I would be priviledged to be considered "camp cook" for any AAPK gathering! Seems no matter where I go I end up cooking anyway! Good thing I love to do it...not very good at sitting still and "socializing"

Jerry, ironically enough, I never once cooked anything in the service of our beloved Corps...I kept my culinary tendencies to myself, and never even had to pull KP duty at all! In boot camp my platoon had the company high PFT so we got to skip our turn and spend extra time on the range instead.

Wayne, that is cool that you grew up with an Ithaca 37...it really is a great gun. Funny that you should mention how it puts the casings out right at your feet, as I very much appreciated that feature this past trip, due to all the leaves on the ground. Found them all and brought them home for my daughter, she has them on her bedside table...she likes it when I bring back "souveniers" from the woods....

I finally was able to get a chance with the turkey calls, or should I say my grandson was. Knowing it wasn't the right time of year I let him rub that wood together, making some horrible noise, but I played it like he was a champion caller......wait.....I said.....listen......do it again........nothing. Good job buddy, musn't be any turkeys around today. We'll try again next time!

Good news is we spotted 3 deer, 2 wild boar, and 2 Gopher tortoise's!!! And.....and we found a squirrel's tail.

I let him swing the hatchet for most of the day. He cut little branches, hacked down a 3" round stump and busted apart a 4 foot stump of fatwood......he was a machine with that hatchet.

He'll be 5 in 11 days.....man the time is passing quickly, I relished the time spent with him today!!

____took your advice and put this one down this morning*** More cube steak & hamburger!!!!! ( 125 lb. doe ) ---- just can't seem to see that "buck" ???___another doe about the same size,came by 5 minutes, after I shot this one, _ walked right by the dead one,browsing -- crossed over the lane and came back across a little farther down ( still browsing ) ---never paid the dead deer any attention --maybe see a buck,when it gets colder ???
