When did Schrade begin this pattern,anybody?

Thank you Dale and Dave for looking and commenting.Although being a beautiful pattern,it's obscurity and pruning blade puts it in the closet for a lot of collectors.

I posted this one in the rare stamps thread,it belongs in this archive also.

BARTLETT MFG CO DETROIT MICH g(Goins abb. for guesstimate) 1900-1920 4 1/8" as are all Schrades and Empires of this pattern.Obviously Schrade Cut Co made this one.I don't know when Schrade initially made this pattern for sure?.

I have the Schrade Catalog E with the supplements.Schrade first listed this pattern in that catalog in 1932,so Bartlett Mfg lasted longer than John Goins guessed or Schrade made the pattern earlier than listed in their catalog.??? Opinions welcome,but I think Goins missed it by at least 12 years.After all he said it was a guesstimate.

I think you're right, this knife does appear to be a later Schrade made knife, certainly later than 1920.

It would be interesting to find out when Schrade started using the peach seed bone. I almost always see it on later knives, most commonly the Schrade Walden marked knives.

By the way, I looked up Bartlett in Detroit and it's called Bartlett Arborist Supply. The name indicates that their main business is mostly gardening related, which would account for their name on a farmer's jack. Their website claims that they have been in business "over 100 years". That would certainly give a wide scope to their furnishing of tools for the trade. They still list pruners on their website.

I'm pretty sure they started using it before WWII, I took a look at my bone handled Schrades and found that of 13 peach seed bone handled knives, 11 were Schrade Walden and 2 were Schrade Cut. Co. Of 3 knives with other jigging patterns, 2 were Schrade Cut. Co.'s and 1 was a Schrade Walden.

Of course, there might have very well been knives with Schrade Cut. Co. blades assembled after WWII.

Germany surrendered in May of '45, the Japs in September. Schrade Cutco had been continuing to make SOME patterns through the war years. They reliquished control to the new owners in December of 1946. So it is not just a question of pre-war or Schrade Walden. It is slightly more complex than that. The knives were not Schrade Walden or stamped as such until 1947.
