This is the best time, when it's clear and cold. Yes they do predict when the lights will be better.
I usually notice them when I get called out in the middle of the night to fix someone's boiler.

And just when is the middle of the night at this time of year? Any time between 3PM and 9AM?

Almost 5pm EDT here and it is still snowing and the wind has picked up.Already plowed the driveway once and it doesn't look like it has ever been touched.Going to wait til the wind dies down before venturing out again. This is our first real snowfall of the year and we are supposed to get around a foot altogether.Could be worse;my son got 30 plus inches last week and they are expecting another foot or so this weekend.

Snowed all night, snowed all day and still snowing. Not supposed to quit until 8 or 9 tonight. I have no place to go so I'm putting off cleaning up until tomorrow morning sometime when the wind dies down.

Pretty crappy here today. Drizzle yesterday afternoon and evening, just enough to make it muddy. 29 degrees now with weatherman saying light snow flurries between now and noon. Looks like I'll be in the shop replacing leaky PTO seal on a tractor. I've been putting that off but too wet to do much else. Supposed to be in the 70s by Saturday though. Typical Texas weather!

Thinking about the weather and Ground Hog Day, I remembered what the old folks used to say about one of the signs of an early spring here in the Florida Panhandle. When you see the bumble bees out, spring is not too far off. Well guess what showed up on a game camera a few days ago?

Wonder if this a more accurate indicator of spring than the ground hog?

LOL Ken, that is COLD!!

We got a bit of cold weather at about 10deg along with some Taku winds that gusted to about 90mph.
Had winds of 70mph here at the house, only lasted a couple days and has died down now.

Jerry, you're right. Here lately a bottle cap would be more than adequate for a rain gauge. Reminds me of the story of the old-timer from West Texas being interviewed by a reporter. When asked how much rain they got last year he replied "Twelve inches. I remember the night it came."

Best perspective on Texas drought weather is Elmer Kelton's novel The Time It Never Rained. One of the best books I've ever read. Roundly criticized by today's leftists however because of its all-too-accurate description of government meddling, and its results.

We rarely have much wind up here in the winter. The wind chill factor would be off the scale.
I recall a wind storm years ago when I lived in Kodiak and I saw several totes go flying past my window.
I'm sure IM knows what they are but, totes are 4'x4' heavy plastic crates with a built in pallet used to hold fish or ice or whatever. I sure would want to get hit by a flying one!

Snowed a bit here last night and is really blowing around now.Walked out to the end of the driveway to get the mail and the driveway went from bare to about 16 inches at the end due to the wind.Temp is about 10 degrees above right now.Tonight is supposed to be around 12 below with a high tomorrow of zero and more wind.
Could be worse:My son lives in Lowell Massachusetts;a city about 30 miles north of Boston and for the last month their official snowfall was 96.3 inches;and more is on the way.
Talked to an old classmate of mine who lives in Maine and he has 3 outbuildings housing his antique and classic cars that the roofs collapsed in on due to the heavy snowfall. He still hasn't been able to get out to assess the damage.

 Sorry, K7K but ol' Al doesn't have time. He's too busy flying around between his 5 houses in his private jet and riding around in his limo. But he wants YOU to ride a bicycle. ::barf::
