Schrade razors and sissors

Today is Presidents day, everything is closed, The snow is 2 feet deep, last nite broke records with a 30 below wind chill and 5 below temp with 40 mile an hour wind gusts and as we used to say in prison parlance I am locked down. So I decided to post something. I noticed that no one ever really discusses Schrade razors. Under Schrade Cut Co Schrade sold razors. These are somewhat rare. Now before I start let me make it clear these are not the Chinese versions made by Taylor industrys after the acquired Schrade in 2003. These were made and sold prior to 1946 ( approx). Apparently prior to WWII under Schrade Cut Co Schrade imported razors from Germany These were embossed celluloid ( pictorial ) knives very similar to what several companies were selling . Crane, windmill, scarab ect colored pictorials . They are tang marked Schrade Cut co. and marked on the back Germany ( some in large letters most in small ) . Now here is when we start to get complicated. They also sold a deluxe pearl version with the tang of the razor covered in pearl the pearl marked Schrade Cut co and most with germany in the obverse in the pearl. That being said either during the war or before it Schrade also sold a line of the more recognizable style of razors under a
limited amount of numbered tangs. To all I can deduce these ran from 151 S to 161 S. smooth celluloid handles some with metal bolsters, some square end but mostly round. Over the years I have gotten 4 of the german one in pearl, 3 cell 1, windmill, 1 scarab, 1, crane. Also 151 S, 2-152 S,154 S,157, 158 S, 160 S, 161 S. I had never seen the Pearl model with the pearl tang until a couple of years ago when I got a chance to get this one from a very well known reputable collector. However since then I have seen several of these pearl metal razor ( blade part ) married to various handles. I feel that they were put together and that some of these pearl tangers blades must have shown up. The blades often out last the handles. I also have a German married to celluloid handles which was highly buffed taking out the word (German ). Also you can see the replaced rivet. I bought it knowing what it was just as an example. I pointed it out to the seller and I got it very reasonable. I am posting some not so great pics of these I would have likeed to do some more closeups but I no longer have the patience needed. These should give you an idea. Oh yes two more things First you will notice 2 sissors in the pictures these are marked Schrade Cut Co. and I may add damn rare, Apparently these were bought and used by Schrade in the factory. I spoke to Dave Swinden ( the last president of Schrade) about them he said that they never made them. He also remembered dimly that they they had imported razors at some time in the past but did not remember importing sissors. So who knows after all it was Schrade and anything is possible. The only reason that the razors are still here is once again that the Wawarsing museum of which I am the curator is full. One more thing in the display you will see one other razor of which I did not show a close up. That is because it is special and I want to remember where it is ( so I do not keep it with the couple hundred of others I have from other companies ) That one for me was one of the very rarist It is a Kipsi Kut from the PoughkipsCutleryCompany .

Hey Rich, those are beauties, thanks for posting them! Especially the ones with the etches intact.

I have 2-3 razors, that's about it. One is an Ulster, IIRC. Mine are not especially flashy like the ones you are showing here.

The scissors are interesting also, thank you sharing them. Scissors are passed over by many collectors, but have their own allure and beauty.

Well, I hope one of two things happen...either you have enough Crown Royal in case you are snowbound, or you get dug out so you can go get some more. I have pretty much had it with snow, I am sure Dimitri would back me up on this. We happen to live in the "sweet" spot in southern NH, and every storm that comes through pounds our area the hardest. The banks at the end of my driveway are over my head, and I have had to do the unthinkable and actually shovel off my roof.(And my father-in-law's roof, who, BTW, is in Florida right now for the winter) Good thing I love his daughter, or it may have not got done.

I bought a plow. for my 75 feet of driveway. I had gotten to the point where I dreaded it everytime i heard a bad weather report. Getting smacked in the face by snow blowing back in my face. Now I put on a coat go to the truck start it. let the truck warm make a pass leaving the snow in the street. Then a pass on the left side and one on the right . 3 passes then back to the fireplace in the barroom if I do it correctly the ice isn't even melted in my glass. Shoveling snow is for the young I no longer fit that catagory. my heart goes out to you guys it is worse up there especially this year. Me I am to tough for that wimpy stuff I go right out get in a vehicle and camp right out in places like the pool at the Taj Mahol in AC or get on a plane to Vegas ( it was 65 degrees in Dec when I was there. ) Yup I like the rough life. Stay well it won't be long and the convertible will be out. To the pure life LT

Thats nice I should have tried to show the nice etchs on some of them but there were a bunch. I am glad you posted. I would really like to fill in the ones I do not have. I have 2 152 S I would trade one for one I am missing I need a 3,5,6,9. Years ago I had a friend named John Clark he died at 104 years old. He worked for NYK in 1917 he told me that only the best cutlers made the razors because it was the hardest craft. LT

I don't have any Schrade razors.
I love the scissors! I have never seen a pair of scissors stamped with Schrade's name except the stuff made in the late years.
