Charlie, during the recent ammo shortage when .22 ammo was so scarce, you could still find plenty of .22WMR at reasonable prices so your 20/22WMR is the right combo these days. As for your cold weather experiences, I'm right there with you but I guess I don't have your intelligence. My hands and feet sure get a lot colder, a lot quicker, than they used to. Not sure how much longer I'll feel this way but I still enjoy being outdoors even when it's cold or hot. Of course, I'm seldom sitting still like when you're squirrel hunting, either. Getting old is not for sissies! Maybe I'll wise up.

I haven't been hunting in quite some time, but I do like to get out and hike or stroll a wooded area.

I'm not going to get out in 20 degree weather ever again, except to walk to the wood pile for an arm load of wood.

I think the reason I'm reticent to hunt alone is the now very real possibility of falling, stepping in a hole, gashing myself on a broken stob or something and not having any ready assistance or help.

I'm not feeble. Actually, I'm quite fit, but I have some balance issues secondary to my left ankle, which isn't right anymore.

Just got this 1962 Remington model 76,Lever Rifle 22LR,from a friend***_______ traded him a $20 pocket knife for it !!!!!! Looks to be a ""neet"" little rifle ---have to clean it up good and go shooting** ( if I can find some ammo ) ---- this was the only lever action,made by Remington and only for a few years ( 1962-1964 ) --- have a great day guys !!!!______________________Monk***

Just got this 1962 Remington model 76,Lever Rifle 22LR,from a friend***_______ traded him a $20 pocket knife for it !!!!!! Looks to be a ""neet"" little rifle ---have to clean it up good and go shooting** ( if I can find some ammo ) ---- this was the only lever action,made by Remington and only for a few years ( 1962-1964 ) --- have a great day guys !!!!______________________Monk***

Great deal and looks like she will be fine when cleaned up. Like the stock on that rifle. Congrats on the pickup Monk.

Not that I was not aware prior to this post but you are a smart man Charlie. Just not a good idea to go hunting by yourself even if incredibly fit. I had a late season Elk tag a couple of winters ago. Burned up 4 weeks of that since no one could go with me. Finally the last week four of us went. Clear but cold with 2 foot of snow and 5 or 6 foot drifts at the mountain tops. Very remote and not the place you want to be alone with a busted leg or broken truck.
I always carry a bunch of survival stuff, food, water, extra clothes and tools to get me out if I get stuck out in the desert on the RZR but most times I am going out with only my trusty chocolate Lab. Not too bright but I have the fever and let me tell you, always a huge relief when I get home in one piece. Almost didn't a time or two. Usually some degree of white knuckling on every trip.
Opening day OCT 2013 for chuckar. Tough birds to hunt as they hide out at the mountain top covered with loose shale that my dog and I love so much. I load the dog into the RZR and off we go to a fairly remote spot. I pull into a canyon and proceed to hike up the 45 plus degree slope for about 2000 or 3000 feet (pic 1). Not much loose rock and no birds either. Look at pic 2 and expand and that little dot under the red arrow is my RZR. The houses in the background are the closest help.
I decide that we may kick up some birds if we take another route down. I cross atop of the mountain and see a ravine/ water funnel going down. Looks like a good route. NOT!!!! Started off fine but shortly turned into the entire route was loose slipping shale with 60 degree slopes on both sides and 45 degrees or more down. Even trying to walk down the center of the ravine was a peril. We had reached a "rubicon" where turning back was more dangerous than continuing.
My dog, normally fearless, looked at me the whole way down (an hour or more) like "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, I ain't liking this. Tell me what to do to get out of this mess". She is a good obedient dog but she never listened better than that day as I guided her slowly down the mountain. Wish I had some pics but pics were the last thing on my mind at the time. Made it home fine but more excitement than I had wanted for sure. Beer flowed freely...

..monk, I REALLY like that one!!...never seen a remington lever action!!..that is neat!!!only Remington I've got is an old semi-auto #241, that breaks in half at the barrel..don't know if it's rare or not, been in my family at least 50 yrs...shoots only shorts........ ...........

Carmillus, is your marked short only? Ormwill it just not cycle the lr's?

...col., it's marked ".22 short only".....I used to shoot a lot of the Remington ".22 rocket's" in it, but I haven't seen those anywhere in years!!!....... .........

Very cool! The short only is more rare. I'd love to find a s,l,lr for my middle boy seeing as he's wrong handed. One of those bottom ejecting old Remingtons wild be just the ticket.

Hey Monk, I do believe you got a pretty good deal on that Remington. I've never handled one of the lever actions but had a lot of time with the 66 which is the semi-auto. Let me share a short sad story about one that I had back in the mid 70's.
Me and this ol'boy cut a deal with a crop duster that had leased the local airport as a base of operations. We planted soybeans on the sides of the asphalt runway, north and south and the sides of the grass strip east and west all the way to the fences. There was another 10 acre patch at the end of the main runway that we also rented. It had not been farmed for several years and as we were preparing it, we would run up on a pair of red foxes, real regular. Back then they were considered varmints and were not protected as they are today. We see a lot more gray fox than we do red, so I figured I need to have a red pelt. So being as bright as I am , figured I could take my saddle scabbard off my saddle and tie it some where on the tractor and I would be ready for ol' Brer' Fox next time he showed up. Tied it off on the top side to back-up light on the left fender and so it wouldn't bounce the bottom was tied to something on the back of the tractor, almost like on the horse Well I made several rounds in the field length wise, 1/4 mile and hadn't seen neither fox but what I did see was a sad sight. The top end of the saddle scabbard was dangling, hanging by the little end, empty. Down at the west end of the field I found my Remington 66, topped with a Weaver 2.5K(had a post reticle). It had hit the ground just right and the 10 foot disk left a mark every 9 inches It dented the scope, it bent the barrel and generally destroyed a fine shootin' little rifle.
I gave it to a guy at work, he cut the barrel back behind the bend, cobbled up the remainder of the stock and made somethin' to put in an ol' fishin' boat for a snake gun. It originally loaded through the stock, so it became a single shot with auto ejection . For general farm use and plinking it was a wonderful little rifle, I would love to trade for another one if I had a $20 pocket knife to spare.

A Nylon 66 was on my wish list for years. Never did get around to getting one. I also coveted that little Browning Semi-Auto .22 but could never afford one of them. And last but not least on my wish list was a Ruger Mannlicher stock 10-22. Came close one time when Walmart still carried firearms and had one on sale for about $200 or a little less (if memory serves).

Here's a 552 I bought several years ago. I thought the stock was plastic at first. It has a high shine finish and stamped fleur-de-lis style embellishment.
Not my favorite look in a gun stock, but I got it for a good price. This model has the gallery gun case deflector.
The sights set up high. A bit different, but I'm OK with that.
They sure have evolved.

Great gun Joe! I personally like the stock. Not a huge fan of embellishments myself but all the components look great together. Interesting design where the stock accomodates the bolt.
