285UH brought back from the dead

a friend of mine was going to throw this old trapper away, but I asked if I could try and fix it up a little to use a few more years, so he just gave it to me. It had been sharpened almost too much and you couldn't open the blades because the kick had been ground down a little too much and the finger pulls were out of sight. But I managed to grind a notch in the handle so I could find the finger pulls and it works. Should be good for a few more years. It still has really good snap and is sharp! Just thought I would show what you can do with another mans junk, if you have a few tools and some time. I used a 3/4" sanding drum in a drill press to put the notch in it. thanks for looking, terry

That's a good way to bring one back from the dead! Had to do that on an old #39 Queen so I could get the nail nick exposed .
What kind of work did your friend do to wear the knife so much? Ain't much meat on them resurrected bones!

He is a pretty serious trapper and he does his own skinning and putting up of furs. I have made him several "special purpose " knives over the years and when he gets a knife, he uses the hell out of them, no collector knives for him terry

Great job breathing new life into that very well used Schrade Uncle Henry! It is obvious your friend has been using that knife a whole lot. I have a few Schrades laying around on work benches that are in poor shape from over use and abuse.....I just cannot think of throwing them away....lol

follow up on the old worn out trapper, My friend and his grandson were up last weekend and I gave the knife back to his grandson (10 yrs old) and you should have seen the smile on his face! A good place for an old friend! maybe the kid will get a little use out of it before he looses it! Terry
