HELP on this 2 OT

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

I have never seen anything like that before. It doesn't look "right" to me. For instance, the top bolster is very worn down, but the stag looks nice and crisp.

I say redone knife, but I'm no expert.

As far as I know they came with bone handles .Red or brown. The Craftsman mainly had brown handles and a shield.

That knife is a rehandled mess (and I told him so a few days ago).

Looks like a genuine stag rehandle to me.

Meerschaum bone was a marketing term Schrade used for delrin.

Here is a link to wikipedia's explanation or meerschaum which has nothing to do with bone.

I agree 100% Cal!

There are two different types of handle rivets: a flat rivet (nickel silver?) sunken down in the stag at the front of the mark side and a domed brass pin at the rear of the mark side. If it was done at the factory those handle rivets would've both been the same. Notice also where the stag was hafted at the mark side rear bolster; you can see the grooves in the stag from the sanding belt. Schrade would've used a much finer grit and would've gotten those deep grooves out.

Both rivets on the pile side are domed head brass to rivets. Again notice the roughness of the stag where it was hafted.

Glenn is right, the stag looks new but the knife looks old.

One thing that concerns me greatly about this auction is there are no pictures of the master blade in the open position that will show the entire length of the blade. The seller shows the bottom half of the master blade when he shows the tang stamps on both sides, and he shows the full length of the pen blade, but not the master blade. I am wondering if there is something wrong with the master blade also; poorly sharpened, tipped, or something.

Either the seller has little or no knowledge of what a real 2OT looks like, or else he is being deliberately evasive and maybe even deceptive.

And if he doesn't know real stag when he sees it... ::shrug:: ::dang::

I would be very cautious of this one! ::nod::

Good observations, Dale; thank you. The ebay is a nest of fools, idiots and worse (I oughta know; I are one). I try to do a good job, though. I just started selling, and I have already run into the other side of the equation, less than impeccable buyers. One guy bought a knife from me and had it sent to the address where he does not live anymore. I spotted problem immediately and told him. So he sent it to the resolution center instead of contacting me. They took my money. He has the knife now and won't tell the resolution center to release my money. Good fun, that ebay! I tried repeatedly to get a store here but finally had to give up.

Is this 2OT correct or re-handled? Never saw one in jigged bone before.

I have seen them with jigged bone before, but that is pretty pristine looking bone with no wear on it. The edges are not smoothed from handling for a knife that old.

Sure doesn't look like any Schrade Walden bone I've ever seen. ::td::

TJ, Schrade never used that type of jigging on their Walden or Cut. Co. knives until the later Boker boned models. Also note how the threads are almost gone on the bolster due to re-glazing of new pins. On both knives, the center pin appears to have been peened. The factory spun these pins on knives with jigged bone and stag covers.

Here are the pictures and auction description of the OP knife for posterity:
Very nice rare old timer. Unsharpened.

“This was the very first Old Timer model introduced, marking the beginning of the Old Timer line in 1959. It was a sleeveboard pattern with the Washington Bolster and Meerschaum bone handles. It was manufactured until 1963, and it is probably the rarest of the Old Timer knives. During its 5 years of production, there were only 13,149 shipped. If you consider the total quantity, the rare handle material and the fact that it was the very first in a long line of Old Timer knives, you certainly have a rare collector's item, in more ways than one.”
Q&A Q: These Handles seem to be Stag, did you have it Rehandle
A: No, it's just the way I got it. I am near the schrade factory in ellenville and have seen a lot of different knives over the years. I can't remember where I picked it up but it was locally.
