If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Open your pocketknife today and slice an apple. Offer a piece to the nearest person.

Not gonna take it.

Sad.

No wonder we have all these allergies to natural products. No one gets exposed to them when young anymore. Parents are not passing down active immunity to their offspring.

We were exposed to all that , as were our parents and grandparents and so on before them.

Amen! With our three boys we encourage them to roll in the dirt, play outside, work in the garden. It's important.

Me and the boys will take a slice of that apple.

Oh hell. I know someone (Linnea) who won't use anything that's past it's sell by date. That right there is one of the biggest scams going. Don't get me started.

Yep. Scam.

My wife throws away cheese if it gets a little mold on it. Shucks, slice the mold off and the cheese is better than before, country ham the same. If it ain't got some mold on the outside it isn't ready yet.

Shoot, I think milk tastes better right before it turns anyway. Is that weird?

Well, yes, Colonel, that thing about the milk is really weird.

I don't really think the "Sell By:...." thing is a scam so much as it's people erroneously thinking of it as an "expiration date", which it is not.

Actually, if you have an Aldi Store in your area, you can get a great bargain on milk that is close to its "Sell By" date, as they will drop the price down to $1.95/gal to move their aging supply out the door.

Sarah and I will go through two gallons every five days, so that's a great draw for us.

We like Aldi. With three little boys we can go through some groceries. Aldi is a far piece from us though. In our town we have a similar sow called Ruler. It's Kroger's version of Aldi except everything is kroger brand. We save a bunch there and the food us may excellent.

Yes Gents, the one thing about my wife that makes me want to tear my hair out. Wonderful woman in all respects. I guess I/we do things that make her feel the same but come on, in my opinion. I have eaten all types of food, past date, non refrigerated over night leftovers, raw, whatever, you name it. To her it is "old" and she wants to toss it out. I tell her if the world goes south which is where we are heading (not a doomsday guy by any means) and you were starving, would you eat it? No answer there.
No matter how we love each other, men and women are different animals/wired different too and we all have our idiosyncrasies.

My wife does the same thing! I keep telling her it's good for at least a week or two past the "sell by" date. Now if in doubt she hands it to me and says "Here, taste this and see if it's bad". My theory is, if not for women us guys would still be livin in caves. And we'd like it!

I guess I have to give Charlie the nod here, in that the "sell by date" is not so much of a scam as it has become misunderstood as a de facto "use by date" for a major portion of the population. I do think the date on most products (milk is not one of them) is at the very least, pessimistic. Most food is still "good" way beyond the sell by date and that is what led me to call it a scam. A scam to put an unrealistic "sell by date" on the product in order to sell more product long before there is a need for it. I would like to think manufacturers are just being overly cautious but I guess I'm too pessimistic to believe that.

Linnea is a Diet Coke drinker. She will NOT drink a Diet Coke that has passed the "sell by date". She calls it the "expiration date" and claims the Coke tastes like the can after that date. ::shrug::

Since this is a gun thread, what about ammunition? Do you throw away ammunition that's been on the shelf for a few years (or in my case, decades)? Do you think ammunition goes "old" within your lifetime? I suppose there are some of you who don't give it a chance to "get old".

My oldest daughter is a quality manager for a very large food company, she said that the expiration date is just a suggestion. If you open it and it's still good use it. ::tu:: ftd

I have pre WW2 ammo that still works fine.
A few weeks ago I heard Glen Beck and one of his ignorant cronies talking about getting rid of old ammo. That proved to me that he's a phony.

Good question Jerry....I've always wondered about the expiration date since they began adding that....

Wait, when did they begin adding expiration dates to ammo.....it's probably some crock of bs. Hopefully we're all men and won't throw it out, because we know darn well ammo don't go bad.....just point the loaded gun at someone with loaded ammo, they'll sh!t their pants! ::rotflol::

As long as it has been stored properly like anything else, not wet, etc, it was last forever. In my ammo collection, I have some pretty old stuff in all sorts of odd calibers. i would say 90 to 95% of them are live rounds.
I would never shoot them unless I absolutely had to assuming I could find the old gun that it fits. Pretty confident they would all go boom!

That is a full box of Winchester 'Lesmok" .22 shorts that is pretty old. Full box. Trying to figure out how old they are without much success. They sell for well over $100 now. No doubt those would all go boom also.

...when I went to my buddy's spot to shoot my new henry last week, he shot his old Winchester 73(32-20) and used ammo he bought in the '50's. I fired it twice, and the ammo is still good!!!...... ::tu:: ........

I had some old 1940's/50's paper, 12ga, high brass shot shells and decided to shoot them up. The very first one that I dropped the hammer on fired, but not in a normal way. The shot was more explosive than any other 12ga I had ever fired. When I pulled the shell I found that the brass had split. Last one of those I tried.

There's an Amish run grocery store not far from here that sells canned goods with "expired" dates and cans with dents in them. You can buy the same food there for a third of what it would cost you otherwise and I guarantee you it's just as good.
