Customized Case single blade trapper
I am still making doing knives for the Oregon show next week.
I want to have a few with my Oregon shield and since I love single blade knives I took a Case 31048 and added bone handles and my Oregon shield.
I wanted to do something different with the bone so I took smooth bone and attempted to make my own saw cut bone in a disc sander. I learned a few things in the process & will probably do it a bit differently next time.
Here is a pic of the shield inlaying in progress. Here are some pics of the end results:
Thanks for taking a look at the pics.

Re: Customized Case single blade trapper
It didn't give it the same look as saw cut but it did give it a unique appearance. Not bad actually.

That trapper came out nice!
I am curious about the knife jig. Is that your design? It's very cool!

Thanks guys, glad you like it.
It was my first attempt at getting the saw-cut look on bone.
They are listed on page 86 of Jantz catalog #50. Currently listed at $89.95; not cheap but it sure is handy!
They can accommodate oddly shaped knives and are quite versatile in their adjustments to fit unique shapes.

That is called a Knifemaker's Contour Vise. It was a gift from my wife several years ago.#goldpan wrote:That trapper came out nice!I am curious about the knife jig. Is that your design? It's very cool!

Dale, that's a great knife and a great shield.
I hope you'll put that shield in "GOT SHIELDS?".

Nice job dale, shield looks great. What is the feeling of the bone in your hand? Does it have that rough feeling? Also what procees or machine did you use to make the rough cut?

The bone has definite texture, but is polished so it it not rough feeling, if you understand what I am saying.0078 wrote:Nice job dale, shield looks great. What is the feeling of the bone in your hand? Does it have that rough feeling? Also what procees or machine did you use to make the rough cut?
I archived the saw-cut affect with a 12" disc sander & a 24 grit sanding discs. Watch your fingers!!
I have made fixed blade knives from Damascus blanks, but I don't have the fancy attachments for my grinder to do small blade grinding. I rarely make a knife by stock removal. My 2 x 72 grinder is a pretty basic one.
