Educating ebay sellers

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Educating ebay sellers

Post by TreeBlah »

About a year ago I got ticked off at the whole ebay thing so I deleted my account...again.
Well, I recently made up a new one and paypal, too. Let's see how long this one lasts.
I have won a few knives I wanted and I check out new listings frequently and recently I noticed a listing that was incorrect. Someone was selling one of the china made POS knives as being authentic because it "doesn't say made in china". The knife was listed for about 4 times what it should go for, which is still more than they're worth.
I messaged the seller and very politely explained what he had. I sited AAPK as a good source of info. The seller thanked me and corrected the listing and even dropped the asking price.
I was really surprised how well that went.

In recent weeks I have helped several more sellers with there listings and have been met with gratitude.
This weekend I noticed a listing for a Schrade Walden "very old, very rare" knife, a model SWAJB47.
I informed the seller that it was neither "very old" nor "very rare".
For several emails this seller insisted it was authentic until I cited a specific webpage from another forum that had a picture of that knife with an explanation of it's origin.
The seller finally messaged me back and said that she was sure it was the real deal because her husband thought it was.
She changed the listing.

It sickens me what taylor brands ::barf:: has done to my beloved knife brand. I have loved Schrade knives for 40 years and have narrowed my collection to just Schrade in the last 15 years or so.
Isn't there some law that requires foreign made junk to say "china" somewhere on it?
I wish I could sue that SOB for not putting "china" on all that crap.
And by "sue" i mean "beat with a stick".... ::dead_horse::

And all the post-2004 camillus and bear & sons crap should be melted down.
Bear and sons makes crappy product all around anyway. Always have, always will... You will NEVER change my mind on that.
And though Camillus made great product back in the day, the camillus-made-schrade was inferior and junk.IMO

Anyway, enough ranting...
Has anyone else "helped" sellers before with their listings?
If so, what happened?

I hear ya. The daily hits on items for which I have saved searches come in and several times a week I see listings that have incorrect information in them. I've gotten to the point where most times I just let them go but sometimes I message the seller with the correct information. Most are appreciative and change the listing or include my message in the listing. Some feign appreciation and just ignore the information. And then there's the occasional horses keister who acts like you just kicked his dog and called his wife an uncomplimentary name. The human animal is such an enigmatic creature.

I saw a 1988 Remington repro advertised as real bone the other day. I politely asked the seller if they were sure it was bone, and received an equally polite response thanking me for getting them to take another look. The listing was soon updated with a correction. I think there is more ignorance than intentional deception on eBay.

I agree. Even those who sell a ton of knives on eBay are not necessarily knowledgeable about the knives they're selling.

I have given up on trying to get Ebay sellers to correct their listings. One seller wanted to sue me because I used the sellers picture on this site to ask if the knife he was selling was right. The knife was wrong and still went ahead and sold it with a false listing. These sellers only care about the money, not the buyer.

Sue you for copying his photo from a public forum-eBay......that clown needs to wake up. I too have contacted some sellers and have yet to run into anyone who was nasty. I will continue to help these sellers as much as I can, I do not want a less knowledgeable collector to make the mistake of purchasing something that has been misrepresented.

Just my two cents worth!

You had me till that last statement in red. I think the Camillus made Schrades are not inferior, but they are junk because they are made under the taylor name. And deceptive (taylor) because of the Walden stamping.

As far as 'helping' sellers with their listings- you cant really expect sellers to take what you say as gospel. IMO ::handshake::

I don't expect anyone to take a total strangers word as gospel.
However, I present each one with some sort of evidence to back up
my word and I present it in a very humble and helpful manner.

As far as the camillus made schrade being inferior...
I've had camillus knives in the past and they were good quality.
I bought a camillus-schrade just to have one in my collection. After a while I became disenchanted
with that knife and decided to just sharpen it and use as a beater.
Most difficult thing to sharpen ever and would not hold an edge for nothin'.
All 3 blades.
I ended up giving it away moments before I would have put it in my chop saw.
Total crap...
I don't think the love was there at that time.

To list an item, any item, for sale without knowing what you have is ignorant.
Failing to research that item is negligent.
Knowing different and listing anyway is unethical.

I have given up on trying to educate eBay sellers. Occasionally one was grateful and would actually change their listing, if what I told them made the knife more valuable. But mostly they say "thank you" and ignore you. One seller even blocked me from bidding or sending him any communication. Over the last couple years that has cost him a few hundred dollars for items I could not bid on that sold much cheaper than they should have or didn't sell at all.
For that seller, there is a monetary price for willful ignorance.
