A Schrade or a ??? Photo

Photo shows comparison between my Schrade 153 UH proto when compaired side by side with the Voorhis. The Voorhis is the last knife I purchased. I am very pleased I decided to make this one my last for a while, its a nice way to finish collection.

Now, which one should I use?

The 153 UH in the pic is a very nice field knife. However having processed hundreds of animals over the years I still prefer the 15 Ot and a sharpfinger (152 OT ) also I like the 156 OT pattern, again the carbon edge comes back in just a couple of swipes. If you are just doing a couple of animals and if you have time stainless is great great but for dawn to dusk camp butchering I still like carbon. Here are some from my kit they have seen several decades of use. the 15 is a Schrade Walden bought in the 60tys I am not sure it may be a PAT applied for model.

I would not be concerned with using the 153 it is the regular staglon handle version and these are still around if you want one for display the stag versions are rarer and because of that I keep mine just for display. I just reread that your 153 is a proto ??? Could you explain ??? I am missing something??? LT PS Just as a historical note The Sharpfinger was one of Schrades most sucessful knives ( and rightly so ) that they ever produced . The baers both felt it would do well when they introduced it. However the general consensus among the other big wheels at the plant was that it would be a flop. They were against it . One very well known vice president ( who's name I will not mention ) said that if they sold he would eat his hat. I wonder if he used salt to season it.

The little 152 I used to dress out my first deer in 1975, it’s been a great knife!

The 497 I used to help skin my brothers first elk in 2001, that sucker will take an edge quick and stay sharp! I don’t recall where I picked it up, probably a swap meet.

Yes its a proto it is stamped 000 on crossguard. The way I got it was a long sad story.

I received it as an exchange it ended up costing me near enough to $175 US with post cost it came to close enough to $250 AUD and thats with out the
sheath included which I purchased and had sent seperately from the USA.

This is rather alot of money for an otherwise standard carbon 153 UH, I dont think Ill use this one but Im sure it would function very well on the feild.

The Voorhis knife is only for Killing big T-Rexs and there are none of those around here.

Thankyou for getting back I was abit confused since usually the 153 was not numbered however some of the earlier I guess were in any event you say it is carbon that also surprises me since the UH line is was stainless however anything was possible with Schrade. In any event thankyou for elaborating . LT

Yes thats right they normally are not numbered but Schrade
prototypes are often numbered when the subsequent preceeding
full production models of the same version or type are not. I have
found this to be true with a number of different Schrade prototypes
and their subsequent versions of same so I dont doubt it is true. I
cant say how often this occurs.

Perhaps it is stainless ? Here below is the same knife compaired with
a knife that is definitely a stainless 153 UH, there are a number
of unaccounted for differences highlighted. I pressumed that
these differences were because the other was a carbon steel knife?

Here is a proto photo sample, I saw one the same on ebay a few months ago it had no number on bolster at all.

One can tell that LT has in fact field dressed many deer by the size of the knife he uses. That 156 is the perfect size. Greenhorn hunters always outfit themselves with the most outlandish blades.

All three knives would have a place in the field dressing, skinning and butchering of a white tail or mule deer. Perhaps even larger game. Have to touch up the blades often if used on bear, would do the job though.
