Cheetah with extra 1 in pattern #
Does anybody know why some 6111 1/2 Cheetah's from 1965-69 have an extra 1 in the pattern number tang stamp? I'm looking at one that clearly has 61111 1/2L stamped on it. Is it a factory error or is there some other reason for it? I noticed that it is specifically listed on the price guide as well-- for $1100, which makes me think it's kind of rare.

QT having the extra 1 on the stamp was clearly a Factory error. I don't know if the guy couldn't count or was hungover from the night before. There are some 6111 1/2 made during this time that didn't get the patten number on them at all. Maybe someone else know the reasons, but I don't. Hope you got a good deal on the knife.

Scarce knife. As Larry stated, there are 2 USA factory errors. With the extra 1 and also no model stamp. I have the latter of the 2 with some sick strawberry red bone. I passed on a mint extra 1 example a few months back that was offered to me and sold for 800 bucks by a very reputable member and CASE expert. It was well worth the price but I was hemorrhaging money at the time with a death in the family and other unforeseen emergencies.
This is my primary pattern of CASE sub collection that I pursue. Besides 2 of the 3 rare protos from 70' that I don't have, this knife you mention in the OP is the only gap in my collection from XX thru 1981' when the 11-1/2L was discontinued prior to being resurrected in 2002' (I believe, do not do the newer CASE swing guards).
So yes, scarce knife in OP. Yes factory error. One needs to understand the frugality of CASE at that time. If they pumped out numerous example of both of the USA factory errors, they either realized after they were assembled or before. Either way, the blades were not going to be thrown in the trash. If I run across one someday, maybe I will fill out the gap, if not, no big deal.
$1100 is a bit much but for a gut like me, if stone mint, I might pull the trigger on that. That said, don't expect unless you find a guy like me that that knife will sell for that.
Would like to see a link if you have it. No dog in this fight.

One marked 61111-1/2 in what appeared to be very nice condition sold for around $350 (don't recall the exact figure) on eBay a couple of weeks ago.

Yup, Ken...that's the one I was looking at...and bidding on. But, unfortunately, I lost in the final seconds...I was really hoping to get it for less than what it eventually sold for ($326), but, then again...that's always the case with us dreamers, isn't it? Here's the link to the knife that was sold on eBay...someone's a little bit poorer, but also a lot bit happier, I would imagine.
(I would've also included the photo, but I don't know how to transfer photos from eBay onto AAPK)

Believe me, I'm very challenged when it comes to computers.

Q, sorry you didn't win it. I didn't bid but watched it. The seller didn't mention anything about the extra 1 mistake in the pattern number anywhere I saw in the listing, so not sure they knew about its rarity. Figured folks with a sharp eye would recognize it for what it is. I'm not much into Cheetahs (I do have a couple if them though) so wasn't planning to bid but was curious what it would sell for. At least maybe another AAPK member got it, I hope.

Re: Cheetah with extra 1 in pattern #
Yeah, well, I collected Cheetahs for many years and this one is the first I've ever seen with the extra 1 in the tang stamp. Five years ago I would have pulled out the big guns and bought this baby without question; but, I have kinda moved on in a different direction, collectionwise...so, I wasn't really "bidding to win," nevertheless, I hope that whoever did end up winning it understands and appreciates what they got...and judging by the amount they were willing to pay, I have a sneaking suspicion that they do. I have only a few cherished Cheetahs left and they're among the relatively few favorite knives (well, about 150 or so) that will go with me to my grave (if the greedy grandkids don't get their greasy, grubby little oily hands on them first!). Which reminds me...I need to redesign my coffin to accommodate all my favorite knives!

Well, I'm the one who won it. I had never owned one of these rare birds til recently, bought a mint one late last year and now this one. I would never have bid on it had the seller not put the pic of the pattern number in the listing. I'm still surprised that I did not get outbid.QTCut5 wrote:Yeah, well, I collected Cheetahs for many years and this one is the first I've ever seen with the extra 1 in the tang stamp.
