shotgun repair question for you do-it-yourselfers......

I have an H&R single shot 12ga. The lug under the barrel that holds the forearm on popped off while shooting a few weeks ago. The local gunsmith want $75 to fix it. I only paid $60 for the durn thing. Ain't no way i'm payin that much to fix it.

I don't have access to a welder. obviously this would be the best route. I have not tried to ask any machine shops or the like yet.

I thought i would pick yall's brains and see if we can put some good ol American ingenuity to work here. This ain't no African Safari rifle. It's a truck/brush bustin/strap it to the 4 wheeler kinda gun.

I was thinkin some kinda strap that went around the barrel and the screw could go into a block on the strap that would be under the forearm. I guess i could use a hose clamp to hold it together. that would really look redneck there.

Any and all ideas welcome. thanks

buy a new or used gun, put that one to rest. metal id fatigued.

you got to buy the whole barrel. $80. no thanks. I don't believe it is ready to be retired. the original weld was 2 tacks. one on each side of the lug.

I most surely would not attempt welding this. Most of these lugs were machined in place, or silver-soldered.

Any heat you apply to repair, could weaken the barrel, and cause a failure, right where you're hanging on to it.

Hukk sent the link for the most inexpensive source for repair parts, so it's either duct tape, or another used gun.

maybe some well mixed JB weld to reattach the lug? Just have to make sure it's right where it needs to be. I have seen alot of lugs re-brazed on by gunsmiths.

it looks ike either duct tape or hose clamp then.

If I'm gonna spend $75-$80, I can get another whole gun for that. Which I have no intention of doing.

i was and am a gunsmith and repaired a lot of h&r single shot weapons. rebrazed several lugs back on. i checked the price of a new bbl at gun parts(numrich) and my cost was a bout $65. so i went to a couple of pawn shops, lookin for knives and found several used h&r 12s with snap on and screw on forearms in the $45-$60 range. buy one and you can either use or part out for your old gun. a lot better than tape or hose clamps and safer too.
while duct tape is one of the most useful products on earth, it can be a bit of a problem removing after heating.

I'd get a double barrel. I have a 1907 12 ga. L.C.Smith (Hunter Arms) over at an appraiser's right now. I'm going to get 2 appraisal's on this one, HIGHLY COLLECTABLE. Pretty good situation for me, 92% of all known are already in private collections and there is a scramble for the remaining few.
