Elbow surgery.....

There are times in each of our lives that rain falls, hard times come and it helps to reach out to our friends and to our God for a little support. This is the place to express those needs, concerns and situations so others in the AAPK family can keep you in their prayers.

Elbow surgery.....

Post by Colonel26 »

A week from today, I'm having surgery on my left elbow. I, and since they'll be waiting on me for about 4 weeks, the family would appreciate your prayers.

I have a pretty good case of Tennis elbow in both elbows, and some ulnar nerve trouble (kind of like carpel tunnel only in the elbow). But a year or so ago I really messed up the left one. How? Why by being the good redneck that I am! I was pitching some fuel up on a brush pile I was burning and one hand slipped off the 5 gallon jug of fuel and the jug kept going! It popped my left arm like a whip and down I went!

It's got worse and worse until Valerie made me go turn myself in. So next Tuesday I'll be having an ulnar nerve release, tennis elbow fix, AND a ligament repair on the left side.

Thanks guys.

I'm guessing that's not what you had planned for Christmas this year. Sorry it worked out this way. Take care and let the family bless you for a few days and I'll be praying for them and you. ___Dave

Thanks guys.

Cuz, I agree. I don't think it's tennis as I don't play. But I'd highly suspect it has something to do with handing up all those sticks of tobacco for years. (Phil and T.J. will understand).

That and not being the brightest light bulb in the chandelier when it comes to outside work. I mean why take the time to get help? Or go get the jack to help lift something? Just grab a holt a pull. Right?

TF those boys are a big help. I don't know what I'd do with out them.

Good luck with your surgery.
I got tennis elbow from shearing sheep and driving iron star posts into the ground for fence lines.

I've never sheared a sheep before, but those fence posts sound an awful lot like what we call T posts. I've driven my fair share of those too.

I just broke down and read what they do to fix the tennis elbow. Now I wish I hadn't....

Thank you all. Your prayers and well wishes sure mean a lot.

Cuz, you're being awful generous with my ball throwing there. It's been so long I'd probably mess up my good arm just trying. Lol

Update

We got called Sat. that we needed to drive 2 hours south on Monday, the day before surgery so I could meet with anesthesiology so they can look over me just incase there's some remote possibility that something might be wrong so that they don't have to assess me the day of surgery.
Ugh.

So tomorrow we're going down to meet with them, and spend the night in Nashville. I'd appreciate if y'all could whisper a prayer that anesthesiology doesn't find a reason not to do the surgery on Tuesday.

Truth be told, I thought about just pulling out a Kabar and doing it myself and skipping the sawbones...... Nah. Lol

I think you're right on padding the bill. He plan is to do an arm block and make me real out of it, just short of full sleep. But they "need" to see me anyway. Oh well, momma and daddy are going to keep the young'uns, Precious and I will go down a day early see them, have a date, and stay down there close by.

We've made it to the big city!

We met with the anesthesiologist. I'm good to go.

We're at the hotel deciding on where Precious is going to take me for a LATE supper as my surgery isn't until 2:45 and I can't eat after midnight. And I'm a big breakfast kind of guy.

Thanks for your prayers.

Thanks Dale, I really appreciate it.

Yeah, my wife and kids all like to eat breakfast two or three hours after they get up. Me, I'm a feet hit the floor, where's the biscuits and gravy kind of guy. This ain't going to be pretty.

There's a steakhouse right across the street from where we're staying. We're going to walk over and have a LATE supper. Maybe it'll help. Lol

I hope and pray everything went well.

Actually, us surgery folks tried several years ago to be more rational about that NPO after MN stuff, by telling the late surgery folks NPO after 4AM or NPO after 10AM.

Know what happened? Everything got screwed up. Patients kept showing up having just eaten or somebody cancelled and no one could take their place because of having had a recent meal.

Make fun of it all you want, but trust me, there is not much worse that can happen at the start of surgery than having the patient vomit, aspirate and then arrest. Almost always get them back, but then the surgery is cancelled, the patient develops chemical pneumonitis and spends days on a ventilator and some will die from that.

All because no one wants to go without a meal.

Big risk for something that really, is patently unimportant.

Hope I didn't frighten you, Colonel.

That's the part patients are not told, Charlie. At least I have never been advised of the ramifications of eating a meal when I wasn't supposed to. It's always just been, nothing by mouth after such and such a time. I'm glad you posted that.

Anesthesiologists, as the most likely target of a lawsuit resulting from the events I described, will not induce anyone that has consumed anything within a certain number of previous hours.

It is, just about, the first question one is going to be asked during pre-op. The answers to that question are recorded and if the patient was less than truthful, i.e. lied, there will be no legal recourse.
