Buck 112 Reworked WIP

Reworking a Buck 112 into a Knife 'influenced' by the Tony Bose "Lanny's Clip".
There is no way I can afford a custom Lanny's Clip or for that matter one of the Case Collaborations (if I could find one) So I have started to use a Buck 112 in an attempt to make a knife 'similar to' a Lanny's.

Nice job! What are the handles? Nice swirling grain pattern. I'd guess olive wood but not sure.

I'm going to take a stab at the wood while we are guessing, judging from the pics maybe osage or mulberry.

I never understood how a hardened steel blade can pivot on a brass or german silver pin and not wear out the pin and get loose quickly. Seems like a steel pin (like Camillus and others used) would be much better. Someone enlighten me. Thanks.

brass and bonze have natural lubricating properties.

Steel pins are a good idea on hard use knives but the blades are usually worn out about the time a non ferrous gets worn to the point it affects function My main EDC has a steel pin though, many of the vintage german knives had steel pins because germans generally tempered their blades very hard. Most pins I have seen on dismantled knives are bent rather than worn, usually from force cutting stuff that is too hard to be cutting with a pocket knife anyway

Spot On Muskrat Man ...the wood is Mulberry ... and indeed it would probably be very difficult to tell the difference between Osage & Mulberry from just a photo. An elderly lady I know had a Mulberry go over in a storm a few years back which I cleaned up for her and stacked away, used a bit to turn and then spotted this piece when I was looking for something to use as covers on this project. I liked the way the grain lines 'sort of' follow the curve of the handle. There is a slight flaw on the pile side cover - but what the hey! Its wood and you go with what you get. The Mulberry has been very good to work with.

Thanks for the tip MM I was thinking of trying some stain on the off-cuts as an experiment.
Any particular color of stain .. red cedar? walnut?

I use a maple stain that is available here for muzzleloading rifle builders to use on curly maple a walnut stain will work then bring it back with some #0000 steel wool until you get the shade you like

I just have too many hobbies and not enough time - this project is moving ahead 'slowly' ...

Sometimes 'stuff' just takes over (Life - earning a $) and getting back on track with projects can take time BUT ... I finally got there!!

Obviously using the same components means the knives are roughly the same length but the modded version is much slimmer.

Very happy with how this came up and learnt lots along the way!

nice work. thinning those bucks down is a huge improvement imo. They are just too darned heavy for pocket carry as-is

I would not have known it began as a Buck 112 if I had not watched the progression.
In the end how man parts from the 112 did you use, just the blade?

I would love to see a picture of the spring holder / rear spacer you made if you have such a picture.
It appears to be thicker than the one in the 112. I am curious how you made it.

Dale it must be a trick of the angle in the photos as I used all the original parts including the spring and holder.

I was wanting to see how you made the spacer if you had made it.
I have made several spacers over the years, but I am always willing to learn a new technique.

The overall shape of the knife reminds me of a modified Schrade 51OT with a clip blade.
I like the handle shape of yours much better than the 51OT.
I may have to do some modifying to a 51...
