Ima wearing Capt Ahabs' head scarf

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

They also look like bone to me. However, the knife may have been stored next to a knife that was outgassing.

Are the blades tarnished or just the bolsters. It doesn't look like outgassing to me. It looks like they were stored near something damp, like in the bottom of a metal container. I'd wipe them off with some metal polish and see if it comes back. I bet it doesn't. ___Dave

Blister,

The stamp puts it 1946-73.

The STAINLESS stamped on the reverse makes it interesting. I don't know if I ever seen that before.

Clean and polish those scales up and then lets take a look at them ::nod::

For comparison, here's an 856 with bone scales that has the same stamp.

Dave, as everyone has said, the handles are not Celluloid. They're either bone or Delrin (would make the knife after 1965 or so). Get out your magnifying glass and look for the haversian canals (little tiny dots) on the handles. If they're there, it's bone. If they ain't, it ain't. It's almost impossible to tell the difference from a picture but the whitish stuff in the pits of the jigging sure looks like Delrin Haze (my made up name for it). If the handles turn out to be Delrin, just scrub them down with a rag with some machine oil (3-IN-One oil or similar), they'll clean right up.

Your knife looks like bone to me. Schrade seeded out a few stainless blades in the 1950s but not many. They may have been received poorly by buyers (?). Here is a shot of a 1950s Schrade Walden bone muskrat with a stainless blade. The bone looks very close to the bone on your knife, Dave.
