Ulster B.S.A.

I'm trying to find out when this knife was made. Ulster boy scout camp knife, B.S.A. shield, delrin handles. Blade is etched official knife boy scouts of america, tang is stamped ulster with stainless under it and n.y. u.s.a. under that. thanks, Mike.

I am not a total expert on Ulster, but I do have of the last use of the Ulster name, which was on a Scout knife much like you show here, however the last knife had 1095 carbon steel blades, was stamped Ulster/USA and was made in the Camillus factory. Remember Albert Baer owned Ulster, Schrade, Imperial & Camillus at that point in time.

Here is an S Card from the production department of the Camillus factory.

You can see the first order was in 1984 and the parts were supplied by Imperial.


Since your knife has stainless steel blades and not carbon steel blades, I would say your knife was made prior to the 1984.

Nothing precise, but that is the way it often is in collecting knives, especially those companies associated with Schrade. They concentrated on making knives not on keeping nice records.

Orvet, thanks for the info. the chart is very interesting. I have a post on the case board, ( case xx congress ). Would you take a look at it for me? I need some input on the picture. I sent it to case to have it re handled on both sides, someone said they may not do it because of the knifes age. I asked them to send it back as is if they choose not to fix it. What is you'r opinion?, and if they send it back as is, would you attempt a job like that? thanks, Mike.

That looks like a pretty straight forward handle replacement on the Case congress. The knife appears to be in great shape except for the broken handles.

If Case won't repair it, let me know.
I do have a 4 to 6 month lead time currently so I won't get to it immediately.

from Official Scout Blades, by Ed Holbrook, copyright 2009: "Ulster USA made knives in Ellenville, N.Y., and their first official knife was produced in 1963, a standard four-blade model #1996. In 1966, they introduced an all stainless steel blade knife of high quality. Ulster also made a five-blade deluxe model and used the same pattern number as Imperial, but the knife was slightly larger." and a pic, and "U2- round shield, 3 3/4" stag grooved handled, stainless blades, BSA#1036, circa 1966-1976."

Here is the non-stainless version from the same general time frame, in this case 1962-1979, the official scout #1996. The packaging was probably similar.
