case xx congress
I have a case congress that has a broken handle. tang stamp is case xx with u.s.a. underneath. pretty sure that it is 1965-1970. oval shield, old red bone i think. I would like to get it repaired and was wondering if case will repair the knife or should i look for someone else. I have never sent a knife for repair before. Need some input on this subject. Thanks, Mike.

Hi Mike:
You're probably going to get several ideas on how to proceed. All of them will probably be good but there is no "single answer" to that question. Ultimately it's your decision to choose the best course of action based on your needs.
That being said, here's a few options:
1. Send it to WR Case & Sons. You can go to their website and print out the form and follow the instructions.
2. Make contact with someone who can repair your knife to your satisfaction. There are several people here that do very nice work. I'm sure at least one of those guys will post a response here.
If you do send it to Case, on the form they ask you if your knife has any "Sentimental Value". If you check "Yes", that usually limits what they are willing to do to your knife so choose wisely.
You can also call WR Case & Sons and see what they say before you mail it off to them if you choose that route.
Hope this helps.

Re: case xx congress
xx case xx, thanks for the info. picked up that knife at a yard sale for two bucks. thanks again, mike.
Re: case xx congress
No one will be able to match the color of the bone on that knife. If it were me I would send it to one of the mechanics here and let them replace both scales that way it will match. Case will do a fine job repairing it but would probably do the same.

re: WR Case Manufacturing Company
I was going to purchase a used knife that had a cracked scale. I sent them a picture and
asked if they could repair it ( NOT asking to do it for free). They replied since the kniife
was old ( probably 1940's) they could not repair it.
Your result may be different?

Re: case xx congress
In my experience sometimes Case can repair old knives, and sometimes they can't. I think mostly it depends on the knife, and what's wrong. Case doesn't keep an inventory of old parts. Designs and tooling change periodically especially for metal parts so current production parts may not fit older knives.rea1eye wrote:re: WR Case Manufacturing Company

Re: case xx congress
True Mumbley but they can replace scales on ANY knife. if it is a pattern out of production or the tooling has changed for blades or springs not so much unless you happen to know someone working there
had my Grandfathers knife repaired with a new back spring (hand made in the custom shop) and knife was no longer made but someone at Case Hooked me up

Re: case xx congress
Depending on what you want to accomplish with the repair your choice might not be to send it to Case. If you want the knife as an EDC a Case factory repair would be fine. If you want to keep the knife as close to original for the sake of it being a collectible a Case factory repair might not be the bast answer.
I wouldn't say that no one will be able to match the bone. Pictures of the knife would help for a better answer here on AAPK.

Re: case xx congress
I would NOT send it to Case. XX Congress can be a very good piece. Depends on what it needs, how much is
missing. Maybe a patch or leave it be. Need Pic's.

Greg, I talked to case and they agreed with me to put new handles on both sides. I also agree that a patch would not be good. It's just a parts knife the way it sits, if they can make it beautiful again, I'll use it as a carry around. Mike

Mike that's great . Those are great knives. Watch that coping blade though it gets me every time I pull mine out.

Re: case xx congress
If the knife was mine I'd confirm with Case repair if they can salvage and re-use the shield (pin it on, not glue it). I suspect they will, but better to be safe by asking than sorry for assuming. Current production shields are glued. Just my opinion.
