Here is an ODD Schrade

I was in my Schrade Room tonight just grabbing knives and wiping them down when I came across this odd-ball. This knife came from my Step Dad's collection when he passed. It has been in the box in a cabinet since I acquired it in 2006. He retired from Schrade in 2002 so it obviously came out of the factory...definitely not an end of days knife.

It was in a brown two piece box, as the 108 OT came in with the gold 108 OT stamped on the end of the box.

What is really odd about this knife is that it matches up to the 108 OT exactly in size and blades, however, the Tang reads:

SCHRADE
808 USA

Schrade did make an 808 years ago and it had the peach seed type jigging on the handles with an SHield type shield.

I matched this baby up against a 108 OT and it is identical down to the sawcut Delrin, blade configuration and Old Timer Shield.....EXCEPT the blade Tang Stamping.

Anyone have any thoughts? Was this possible a sample done up with the original 808 stamped Blade? Did an 808 blade get mixed in with the 108 blades, lunchbox special (But why the box and everything?)

Schrade made the 808 up until 1988, so with so many years overlap with the 108OT (began pre 1973 as a Schrade Walden) it's possible a blade got into the wrong bin. Why it got put up in a brown box is anyone's guess.

Wow, the amount of time to mount up and frame all those knives must be huge. Unless it is one's actual job i can't see how a person gets the time to create all these displays. I'm retired but always have so many jobs to do my knife collection is all and everywhere, opposite of an organized display.
Maybe excessive 'busy-ness' is a sign of the times & affects all of us ? (i.e. i think the above display is an older one created years ago)

Roland, it's a photo of one of the display areas at Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It was my feeble attempt at being humorous about Tom's Schrade Room. Tom says he'll post a photo so we'll just have to wait and see. I'm hoping Tom's display puts SMKW to shame!

I could only wish to have my room organized in that manner. My room is set up more for enjoyment of the knives and History, and it is a working room. In other words, I spend a lot of time just sitting and wiping down knives and going through the boxes of paperwork and photos I have. Unfortunately, I still work full time and my time in the Schrade Room is limited. I also do not have the eye for decorating and should probably enlist some professional help to set it up properly.

All of this said.....I truly enjoy my set up....although it is in a little disarray this week....Daughter and family returned from S. Korea for the summer...LOL

There is more and maybe I can post some later today. My family had a lot of history at Schrade....Aunts, Uncles, Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, cousins all worked there at some point. Probably better than 200+ years all totaled

Schrade truly became my passion when my Step Dad wanted me to help him liquidate his smaller collection. He passed before we could get started, so I went ahead and started the research.....400 knives.

The more I researched, the more interested I got and I ended up buying the collection for what Mom had received the best offer at. I have since grown the collection into 2500+ knives. I can't wait to retire, maybe someday, so I can devote a lot more time to the hobby.

Tom, that is an absolute treasure of a collection. I can understand why you have a "Schrade Room".
I knew that you had a plethora of knives, but it is much bigger than that. It is just like the Schrade Museum. A pleasure to look at my friend. Many thanks for showing.
My collection dwindles into insignificance up against that wonderful display.

I am extremely happy with the progress in my Schrade Room, However, I still have a lot of knives that are not on display. I need to figure out how I am going to do this....LOL

I also have a lot of Schrade Files and most of the Military Knife Government and Federal Specs from the 50's forward (The majority centered around the TL-29 and some others). I am trying to come up with some sort of system that makes them readily available to pull off the shelf for research purposes yet incorporate it into the Schrade Room Theme. I have Photo Albums with pictures of Factory Dedications, official functions, Summer party's, parades, ect... This is all part of the Schrade History and I want to have it readily accessible versus in a file box or cabinet. I have tons of the Knife flyers, Salemen's Meeting Minutes, Interoffice and Henry Baer memos...the list goes on...LOL

I am not complaining ....this is a good problem....LOL
