89OT with promotional WD40 can
Picked up this new, never used 89OT, with all the packaging, including the little WD40 can. Can't find any info on it. Anyone know anything about these?

Is the brown OT box, 80's - 90's timeframe? I think it is but not sure.

That is so cute! Now you need a tiny roll of duct tape to go with it!

Re: 89OT with promotional WD40 can
Dave i have not seen that one either. Brown boxes go back to 1970's. I wonder if this is from soon after WD40 first came out. It caught on rapidly and sales of WD40 skyrocketed within 1 year, so promotion was not needed for long.
This is one of the fun aspects of collecting Schrade knives, even after many years of active collecting a never seen before Schrade pops up, like this 89OT with WD40. Schrade made so many knives for all kinds of businesses and situations that something new is still out there waiting for the observant collector.

Thanks Roland! If I'm not mistaken, the 89OT first year was in '89. The '89 catalog calls the Blazer 89OT "New". So, were they using these Brown Old Timer boxes "A Knife Like Grandad's" from the late 80's, into the '90s?kootenay joe wrote:Dave i have not seen that one either. Brown boxes go back to 1970's. I looked up when WD40 was introduced.... and it really took off in the 60's. In the late 80's to early 90's, it was in 80% of all American households. So, around the time the 89OT came out, it was a common household product.
By the way, WD means water displacement.

Would it not be cool if today the USA knife manufacturers would have promotional
packages like this? Just makes knife purchasing/collecting interesting !

Re: 89OT with promotional WD40 can
First year for this knife being 1989, the WD40 must have been to encourage you to buy the knife, not the other way around aw i first suggested.
The brown box it is in looks different from the original 'brown box' of the 1970's.

Maybe the WD40 was a subtle hint to "oil the joints"? Does the aerosol can of WD40 still work? OH

Re: 89OT with promotional WD40 can
My "Old Folder" knife addiction began in the mid to late 80s. I saw this promotion and bought it. (I should have bought 5, who knew?)
Some interesting facts about Schrade USA: and WD40 promotion.
Aside from having a lifetime warranty against defects as long as you registered your warranty...Schrade did a lot of good promotions! At one point in the late 80's/early 90's
I recall the WD-40/$3 credit promo for the Old Timer's. In that promotion you got a small can of WD-40 for servicing the carbon steel blades (Which may not be a good idea) and a $3.00 mail-in credit on Old Timer and Uncle Henry knives. You had to turn in the receipt, UPC code, and the little slip of paper for this offer and Schrade would mail you a $3.00 check. I do recall Schrade doing random promos where they included a free sharpening stone in the blister pack with different knives. Lasty, the 1-year "never lose it" warranty which they did for quite a while. Like the $3.00 rebate promo that you can see in CheckSix's photos above, you turned in all the necessary documentation and if you lost your knife Schrade USA would send you a replacement of the exact model you purchased for free. To my recollection when you received the replacement knife it came without retail packaging. Obviously so people couldn't turn around and sell one which would have been pointless to buy from an individual...Schrade knives were found everywhere.
I believe the promotion sold for under or around $20.00?
Great find, still in box. Lucky dog.
I agree that knife promotions now would be a good thing.
If ever I should see a promotion I will share the info to everyone here.
