Scrimshaw

Shrade put out quite a few knives with various scenes scrimmed onto the handles. My question is do any of you know the actual technique used in creating these scenes for multiple knives e.g. perhaps using a stencil or some method of transfer from the original. I doubt each was done by hand. A few appear to have the artists signature; many do not. Anyone know the names of their artists? Any information will be appreciated.

The handles were hot stamped to leave the indentations and then ink was applied in the invitations.

There were several artists that Schrade had in house. Probably the most well known was Frank Georgianni

I have a lot of the Scrim Shaw sets, although I have not been perusing them as much lately. I grabbed them up when I first started collecting, however, I just am not a huge fan of their Scrim Shaw. I am very fortunate to have some scenes that were acid etched into the blades by Mr. Frank Georgianni, one of them is a 15 OT with a special hunting scene.

Tom, if it is not too hard to locate the 15OT with scrimshaw handles, i would like to see a picture of it. But not if it means you would have to disassemble a whole display.

Not Scrim Shaw handles Joe. He actually acid etched the blade with the scene. I will get a picture and post it this afternoon.
