Here is a nice little stone hawk, made by a local Navajo artist.

stone hawk ?? Looks like a left handed hammer to me.

Do you know why many Indians had a feather in their head band ?

Ken,
I'll take that as a left-handed compliment about the hawk.....

Don't know what answer you are expecting...
But an Indian usually earned a feather much like a soldier might earn a commendation. Some tribes awarded a feather when a young boy became a man. The most prized feather was a Golden Eagle feather, as the Eagle was viewed as God's messenger and stood for courage and bravery.

Someday I might tell a story about myself and 3 others in an Indian bar in Winslow, Arizona.....but not today.

This hawk has it's own medicine bag, with the leg bone of a Fox attached. No real Eagle feathers however, as they are not used lightly.

Well I am so excited to know some thing you did not know. I have to jump in right now and tell you.

You are (as always) right about the feathers when they have a HO DOWN.. or pow wow ?

For hunting they use just one feather that is wide and long in the side of their headband. Then they tilt it just before they shot to use it as a SUN-VISER. This keeps out the sun for a better kill.

Well go ahead and laugh but that is what my Grand-Dad told me...

P.S. be very carefull useing any Eagle Feathers now days.... ::nod::

Bill that's a very interesting looking piece. I don't know anything about things like this but always eager to learn. If you have time could you please explain this piece and what it was used for? Thanks

As I understand it, this piece would be in the design of a tomahawk or battle club, before the introduction of a metal head, as many tribes did not work metal. Also, it would be used by a warrior who didn't have access to...or couldn't afford to trade for...the more commonly seen type. It is decorated with those things thought to give the warrior cunning, courage, and strength.
